2021 tended to be the year where anything new struggled and anything old stuck around. As a result, some long established records weer broken and you were left thinking that new music simply doesn’t cut it.
As the year closed, there were still five singles and sixteen albums still charting from previous years. 84 of the 161 new albums in 2021 only lasted one week. For decades it was New Order who held the record for most weeks charted with their single Blue Monday clocking up 74 weeks. That single now sits at seventh place with the new record held by L.A.B. for their single In The Air, which was still high in the charts on 104 weeks, by years end. At the start of 2022 that track was back in the Top 5.
It was the same on the albums list. Dark Side Of The Moon by Pink Floyd may be in second place with 297 weeks, but after decades at the top, gave the title to Six60 who now hold the record with Six60(2) at 356 weeks by the end of the year. The way it’s going, that album could easily make it to 400.
The big casualty for the year was the Compilation Chart. After 42 years, the chart was struggling with physical sales at an all time low. So. On 14 June, we saw the final publication of this chart. The following week we were introduced to the new Te Reo Singles Top 10.
The big surprise for the year was a new album from ABBA. In November, their first studio album in 40 years topped the chart. They even managed a minor hit single with Don’t Shut Me Down. That single sadly was shut down after just one week. 2021 even saw new albums charting for Duran Duran and Crowded House.
Sales may be dropping but the rise of vinyl continues to buck the trend. As a result, we saw 27 albums re-issued on vinyl, some for the first time.
Kiwis continued to do well, charting 11 new singles and 31 new albums. That’s a huge improvement on a few years ago that saw just three new singles in 2018.
The annual chart shows up the longevity issue. Of the Top 50 Singles, the average number of weeks charted was 36. Compare that to ten years ago, the average was just 20. The Album chart shows an even more dramatic result. The average number of weekc charted in the Top 50 was 76 compared to 26 in 2011.
We are not alone in Godzone grappling with a way to compose a weekly survey, as it’s a similar problem overseas. At the time of writing, in the UK chart Queen are up to 982 weeks with Greatest Hits, ABBA hold the record with ABBA Gold on 1030 weeks, Fleetwood Mac have Rumours at 925 weeks and Bob Marley’s Legend is at 1014 weeks. These four albums are inside the Top 50. With that in mind, unless something changes, expect 2022 to be the same as the last two.
