Rabbit Hole
The Temper Trap/Jess Day/Jaguar Jonze/Cherry Glazerr
A new year probably means new something but what if instead, it's just more of mostly the same? It's not as if new releases are rushing out to be considered so it's hard to really get a clean slate. AND YET, this week sees the arrival of a new #1, from Karnivool, whose "All It Takes" is their 3rd #1 hit, and first in about 12 years, with definitely the longest spanning time between #1's. In fact since Birds of Tokyo were #1 on the first ever chart, it means Ian Kenny has what is currently an unassailable record of #1 hit span. But anyway, they've replaced Wet who drop down to #2 with "Bound". Charley continues her lengthy ascent with "Arizona" now up to #3, ahead of Let's Eat Grandma who drop to #4. Kanye West also finds his way back into the top 5 now, as "Life Of The Party" climbs 3 places to #5. Reaching new heights understandably is WILSN whose "You Know Better" is her first ever top 10 hit, at #9.
NEW ENTRIES
If we can't completely sweep the chart clean of all the 2021 garbage, at the very least I can introduce new artists to the chart. Everyone this week is charting for the first time, and leading the pack is Tierra Whack, whose not-a-cover of "B.O.B.", "Body Of Water", enters at #32. Following that is several names, and yet they're all still new here. First appearing alongside Mura Masa's "2gether" when I must have been in a particularly obnoxious EDM phase that night, NGHTMRE & Zeds Dead have now overtaken him to debut at #34, alongside Tori Levett on "Shady Intentions". Lastly this song is produced by Matt Corby which is probably one of the least surprising music facts that could be heard. That's no problem though for Budjerah who gets his first entry at #38 with "Wash My Sorrows Away".
As is commonly the case but hasn't been the case for at least a few weeks, there is stability at the top end of the chart. Holding the reins for now is Karnivool with a 2nd week at #1 with "All It Takes". Wet don't make it clear what they're bound for as they hold #2, while Charley also holds #3 with "Arizona". Kanye West is up another spot to #4 with "Life Of The Party", while tiffi is vaulting up the chart with "vivienne" now at #5 in its 3rd week, which makes it her first top 10 hit. Also hitting new highs is Claire Rosinkranz, who previously had a barely top 80 hit to her name that I forgot she was on, but now has a top 10 thanks to "don't miss me".
NEW ENTRIES
After last week's shock revelations and such, we're back to more regular times. On the other hand, this new entry is so obscure that its featured artist only has 146 monthly listeners on Spotify, so this song probably doesn't have much more, perhaps an indictment on how many people actually make it to the end of New Music Friday. But hey, that just makes it a hidden nugget, and it comes from the Netherlands, which I'm not certain has ever housed a chart entry before. That is, Das Sound Kollektiv are Dutch, whereas it's very difficult to find out anything about IHAKA. Last night while playing Scrabble battle royale, I did the utterly crushing move of knocking someone out with the word 'jazz', and this is a jazzy entry at #25 with "Fuel For The Fire". It was just a few months ago that SZA got her first chart entry, but that was just as a feature artist which isn't always as special. So here she is breaking out on her own, as "I Hate U", lands at #33. Returning to the chart this week is Lucky Daye, whose last hit was also a guest spot, although unlike SZA he did have a big hit of his own before that. Now he's gonna see if he can do it again with "Candy Drip" at #37, his 3rd entry. Lastly we have a similar situation to SZA but with a big fat asterisk attached to it. Because indeed, Alisa Xayalith has charted before featuring on a Peking Duk track from 2 years ago, which next week is eligible for some chart thing I do if anyone has any funny ideas. But if you've really been paying attention, you'd of course know her from The Naked and Famous who have had multiple chart entries as well. Anyway, her second asterisk entry is at #39, "High Fidelity".
It's a 3rd week at #1 for Karnivool, splitting the difference between their 2009 reigns. They're under threat however from an unlikely source, as newcomer tiffi has now vaulted to #2 with "vivienne", overtaking Wet's "Bound" at #3. Kanye West holds #4 with "Life Of The Party" while Charley finishes off the top 5 with "Arizona". This week also sees Beach House climb into the top 10 with "New Romance" at #8. This is their 9th top 10 hit and first since 2018's "Drunk In LA".
NEW ENTRIES
It's a good run lately for Mitski as she picks up another entry from her upcoming album, which is actually more than her previous album ever managed. She also takes over with the highest 2022 song on the chart so far as "Love Me More" enters at #17, her 7th chart entry to date. Also hot off the back of a rather successful 2021, Let's Eat Grandma follow through with what is definitely the only single they've released since "Hall Of Mirrors". It is of course "Happy New Year" at #29 giving them 3 entries to date. Evidently we can't go a year without a Jaguar Jonze chart entry and she tends to make that certain pretty early on. She's up to 7 ever since making her debut in 2018 with the latest being "CUT" at #32. Lastly we have maybe the last hangover from 2021 as Magdalena Bay finally crawl in at #39 with "You Lose!". It's their 3rd entry to date.
Karnivool maintain their year long reign at #1 with "All It Takes", which in less ambiguous terms means 4 weeks. tiffi breathes down respective necks with "vivienne" at #2, and Kanye West climbs up to #3 with "Life Of The Party". This leaves Wet dropping down to #4, now vulnerable to Beach House as "New Romance" climbs to #5. Also this week is a first time top 10 entrant for Best Coast, whose "Leading" is up to #9.
NEW ENTRIES
Relatively quiet week this one, which itself was salvaged by an always surprising return for Melody's Echo Chamber. Her last album netted a #1 hit in "Cross My Heart" so she is certifiably a big deal in these parts, and she scores a 4th entry to date with "Looking Backward" at #23. Lastly you better believe I'm back on my nonsense. It's a return to the chart for Muse who have been absent for close to 7 years now (they came close to charting in 2018 though), with latest entry "Won't Stand Down" egregiously landing at #32, making for an added twist to the most entries table as they climb back up to 3rd with their 16th.
We have a new #1 this week. Karnivool could not clear the whole month as "All It Takes" drops down to #2, replaced by tiffi whose "vivienne" finishes its ascent that was relatively quick until last week, scoring her first #1. Kanye West holds the #3 spot with "Life Of The Party", while Beach House are just behind at #4 with "New Romance". Wet finish off the top 5 with "Bound" at #5.
NEW ENTRIES
It's always fun when a chart mainstay gets their first #1. That's not to say that this is going to happen soon, but on the other hand, if all we get on the debuts are chart mainstays who have not done so, eventually it's gotta happen. So let's see how we go this week with bülow leading the debuts at #26 with "Don't Break His Heart". As always this promises the existence of another hit of hers in this year, as it's now her 7th debut. Following on we have Hatchie who couldn't quite crack the main chart last year but does so quite quickly with "Quicksand". This is her first entry in nearly 3 years following 3 entries that came in relatively quick succession. For those keeping count, that gives her 4 entries as it enters at #27. Lastly we have AURORA who has made a pretty solid chart comeback last year. In the time since then she's doubled her total entries to 6, as latest "A Dangerous Thing" joins the fray at #37.
tiffi is #1 for a 2nd week with "vivienne", which is great news if you prefer economic use of limited letter variety. Bad news if you wish to see Karnivool at the #1 spot as they are thus at #2 again, heading up a pretty familiar top 4 with "Life Of The Party" at #3 and "New Romance" at #4. Mitski has for the first time in this album cycle cracked the top 5, as "Love Me More" moves up to #5. It's also somewhat joined by what is now the 2nd 2022 song to crack the top 10, as Let's Eat Grandma's "Happy New Year" rises to #9, giving them their 2nd taste of the top 10 dessert.
NEW ENTRIES
What did I say last week about stalwart charting artists without a #1 hit? Well we didn't get a clean sweep but we did for the top half of the debuts and arguably they're the ones more likely to go all the way. Let's see if that's the case for Amber Mark, who debuts with "Bliss" at #25, now her 5th charting entry. Or perhaps there's hope for Arlo Parks, as this is her time of the year to shine it would seem. She scores a 3rd entry to date now with "Softly" as it enters at #30, surely would be easier to remember if it were called "Break It To Me". Next up is a song that's hard to remember for the opposite reason which is that you might see the title and instead start recalling either Slum Sociable or Middle Kids' recent songs of the same name. But no, this time the "Questions" come from r.em.edy and Balaram, two artists totally new to the chart at #34. Lastly hoping to ruin everything is former #1 artist Methyl Ethel, who in these closed off borders have brought along Stella Donnelly for "Proof". Entering at #36 it's their 9th & 3rd entries respectively, and of course this is the 6th consecutive year in which Methyl Ethel have charted something.
It's a 3rd week at #1 for tiffi. This is business as usual and in fact Karnivool are still at #2 with "All It Takes". Mitski however is rising up fast with "Love Me More" to #3, supplanting Kanye West down to #4 and Beach House to #5. This week we also have Das Sound Kollektiv & IHAKA coming together to score their first ever top 10 hit with "Fuel For The Fire" at #8, while it's usual business for Hatchie who know has her 3rd with "Quicksand" at #10.
NEW ENTRIES
Perhaps also looking for a 3rd top 10 hit are the latest debutants. This week The Beths have scored what is so far the highest debut of the year with latest track "A Real Thing". It follows their previous two top 10 hits "I'm Not Getting Excited" and "Dying To Believe" and is their 3rd entry at #13. Speaking of breaking ground for 2022, we now have the first artist to score multiple new entries this year, as Jaguar Jonze picks up another in "LITTLE FIRES". "CUT" is still on the way up at #17 but the new track is close behind at #22. Rec if you like "Happier Than Ever" (song) perhaps. This is her 8th entry to date. It's now time for the obligatory Japanese entry except no this has nothing to do with any anime to my knowledge. It's also extremely '90s alt rock, as "Free" gives Doul her first ever entry to the chart at #28. More debuts to the chart and these ones are a bit closer to home. CHISEKO enters at #32 with "CARE" which also features Perth singer Your Girl Pho. Her real name is Phoebe so I don't know if you're supposed to pronounce it as 'foe', 'fee' or 'fuh'. But wait we're not done with the debuts still because it's the first ever showing for Just A Gent. He's helped by the guest performance from Arno Faraji who has charted before about 2 years ago, though it can't go unstated how much those synth hits really flesh it out. "Who Would Have Thought" enters at #39.
It is now a 4th week at #1 for tiffi. This also makes for 8 weeks now into 2022 without a spicy 2022 #1 hit, but perhaps Mitski is hoping to change that as "Love Me More" moves up to #2. It swaps with Karnivool's "All It Takes" at #3. Let's Eat Grandma now have their 2nd top 5 entry as "Happy New Year" climbs to #4, moving Kanye West down to #5 with "Life Of The Party". Also this week, The Beths score their 3rd top 10 hit to date with "A Real Thing" up to #10, a 100% hitrate all things considered.
NEW ENTRIES
It feels like it's been a longer time between drinks. Maybe it has been and I'm not getting used to how far away we are from the start of this decade. So anyway for the first time since 2017 Father John Misty is back on the chart. He does so with the out of season "Q4", which is his 7th entry to date #23. Next up it's time to break one of those fabled one hit wonders. Back in 2019 Body Type had a quite big hit with "Uma", and I've admittedly not heard from them since. That is until now with their latest entry "Sex & Rage" landing at #30. Alternatively though, a more impressive gap between entries comes for Tove Lo, who scored her first and only entry back in 2014. Now with thanks to the television series that's on the wrong side of the streaming culture war for me to have ever seen it, she's back at #32 with "How Long". On the other hand let's create a new one hit wonder. Well kind of, at the very least Caroline & Claude had a top 80 entry last year but it didn't quite even make my top 350 of the year. On the other, other hand it barely counts because Eleanor Jacks has already had multiple entries in years gone by. The end result though is the arrival of "it's not that bad" at #37.
tiffi is #1 for a 5th week, Mitski is still #2, Das Sound Kollektiv are #3, Hatchie is #4 now and Let's Eat Grandma are #5 you can see that stuff on the chart I'm late. 3 top 10 hits for Melody's Echo Chamber, 5 for bulow.
NEW ENTRIES
I may have said this last year that I am partial to things that sound like Beach House. There are probably several things that sound like Beach House on "Once Twice Melody" that I could put on this chart instead, but it's more fun to give the shout out to Kehlani, who after all has only charted once before alongside Disclosure on "Birthday". Now she strikes out solo with "little story" at #23. I believe this was released for Valentine's Day so just like Eminem songs making the ARIA top 50 a week late, here's Silk Sonic getting their 2nd entry with "Love's Train" at #29. Alternatively it's 6 entries for Bruno Mars and 9 for Anderson .Paak. Despite supposed similarities to other names, it's definitely a first time in the chart for Luna Li. She gets here with assistance from now 3 time charter beabadoobee on "Silver Into Rain" at #35. Lastly, hoping they can stay good for more than a couple of weeks, Beddy Rays pick up their 2nd entry with "Milk" at #39.
Defiantly marking a stamp of superiority to the modern charts (please read this as irony, because it is), we actually have a song from this year at #1. Mitski does it which means that after a near miss 2 years ago she finally secures a 2nd #1 hit with "Love Me More". She replaces tiffi who falls back to #2 with "vivienne", looking to comfortably be the highest 2021 song for the rest of its tenure. Hatchie is up to #3 with "Quicksand", just one spot behind her career high with "Stay With Me", swapping with Das Sound Kollektiv who are down to #4. The Beths rise up to #5 with "A Real Thing", which is also the peak of "I'm Not Getting Excited" that they'll be hoping to challenge. Not only has Jaguar Jonze charted every year but she's also had a top 10 hit every year as well. In less than 4 years she's now racked up 6 of them with "LITTLE FIRES" up to #10 this week.
NEW ENTRIES
If this isn't extremely me-core at this point then I'm having trouble defining what that actually entails. We've got a newcomer to the chart this week in CASS, who certainly knows how to utilise a groove in "vulnerable", entering at #21. Because of tragic circumstances, outside of her home country, BENEE's chart success is in some ways confined solely to this decade. Counterwise though, her success on my chart had been solely confined to the 2010s, having last charted with "Happen To Me" at the end of 2019. That long drought has finally ended though as she returns with "Never Ending", an unlikely team up with Rostam "The" Batmanglij, which might be the worst thing ever but I'm obsessed with it nonetheless. It enters at #24 and is her 8th chart entry to date. Having a bit more reliable success this decade has been Denzel Curry, arguably having one of the biggest hits for me this decade in "Pig Feet". Well, maybe it doesn't feel reliable because he releases a lot of things but he can at least say he's charted every year since 2018. This is now his 7th offering to the chart with "Zatoichi" at #30, which also serves as a 3rd entry for slowthai though he's yet to break out as a lead artist. Lastly it's the not-so-long awaited return of Methyl Ethel, who have been here so soon that they're still charting with another song that also debuted at #36 a month ago. The latest is the bold and adventurous "One and Beat" which dares to go so far as to not question one's haircut activities. They hit the big 10 entries now.
It's a 2nd week at #1 for Mitski. Can she match the 8 week reign she set in 2018 with "Geyser"? Stranger things have happened! But looking to set us into a different strange future is Hatchie, whose "Quicksand" is now up to #2, matching "Stay With Me" as her highest charter. tiffi is down to #3 with "vivienne" and we also have The Beths who at #4 with "A Real Thing" have a new chart high. Das Sound Kollektiv round out the top 5 with "Fuel For The Fire", which if I type enough, I might remember the title correctly and stop calling it "Fuel To The Fire", that's what I desire. Most of the top 10 is just making little shuffles or little fires, but new in here is Doul with "Free", a rare Japanese top 10 hit that has nothing to do with anime or BABYMETAL.
NEW ENTRIES
There's a really obvious comparison to make with this low key lowercase song about driving that has an incredible bridge moment. You could also point out the multi-layered vocals on said bridge and choose to compare it to "We Don't Talk About Bruno" just a smidgen, though I don't think either of those songs mention scraping someone off of the pavement. This formula works for Lizzy McAlpine though who scores her first ever entry with "reckless driving" at #26. She's not the only one scoring a first time entry, and no I'm not just talking about Ben Kessler either, but actually this is the first time on the chart for Skegss, who typically find favour with me far too late to get properly on board. This time I'm merely a month or so behind the times as "Stranger Days" enters at #35. Lastly to bring some familiarity to the table, Hatchie is up for more, as "Giving The World Away" enters at #38, giving her 5 entries all up.
It's an exciting week for Hatchie, her song "Giving The World Away" has moved up 6 places this week, which is the equal biggest climb on the chart this week. In lesser news, "Quicksand" has moved up a paultry 1 place to #1, which is Hatchie's first ever #1. Mitski is thus down to #2 with "Love Me More", while The Beths are up to yet another new peak at #3 with "A Real Thing". tiffi still has "vivienne" at #4, while bulow climbs into the top 5 with "Don't Break His Heart". Moving into the top 10 this week is CHISEKO who brings along Your Girl Pho on "CARE" which is the first top 10 hit for both artists.
NEW ENTRIES
One of those weird chart things that have come about is that until this week, Joey Bada$$ had never had a lead artist entry. He only charted as part of the many names on "Left Hand" in 2019. This week changes everything as "Head High" enters at #29, which is also higher than "Left Hand" ever got. I learnt recently that Dove Cameron and/or her label did a questionable thing regarding music archival. This means that the song of hers I charted 2 years ago, "Remember Me" can no longer be streamed online in a legal manner. Handy that I've bought it but it seems to be suggesting I should keep doing this just in case, and in said case, we now have new entry "Boyfriend" at #38 to give her two debuts. Speaking of two debuts, as seems to be the trend this week, Lucy Dacus returns after last charting in 2021 (so they're all in different years as well), sneaking in with "Kissing Lessons" at #39 which has been bubbling for a while.
It's a 2nd week at #1 for Hatchie, who more importantly is up to #29 with "Giving The World Away". Mitski still holds #2 with "Love Me More" while The Beths are stuck at #3 with "A Real Thing". bulow moves up to #4 with "Don't Break His Heart". Vaulting up the chart however is BENEE, who is coming back in a serious way with "Never Ending" at #5. This is her 6th top 10 hit to date.
NEW ENTRIES
It's been a long time coming but Sigrid finally has a 2nd entry on this chart. Back in 2017 she got a near top 20 hit with "Strangers", and she'll hope to better that with "It Gets Dark" which already enters at #24. Next up is our only debutant artist to the chart, and it's a local one at that. Eddie Benjamin is having an extremely minor US hit currently with "Weatherman" and it enters at #31. Lastly we have a return to the chart for Tate McRae. She was last seen on the chart with "don't be sad" in 2020, and now scores a second hit with "she's all i wanna be" at #36.
It's a 3rd week in a row for "Giving The World Away" climbing up the chart little by little, it's now up to #26. Less importantly, Hatchie has 3 weeks at #1 with "Quicksand". She has a new threat looming though, coming from 1 time #1 artist BENEE who is up to #2 with "Never Ending". She moves the rest of the top 5 down a spot, Mitski to #3, The Beths to #4 and bulow to #5. Moving into the top 10 though is new company, with CASS & Kehlani scoring their first ever top 10 hits at #9 & #10 respectively.
NEW ENTRIES
It's been quite a while between drinks for Warpaint. They strung together a few entries in the mid 2010s and have not been seen on these shores since, but they make no waste with the return, as "Stevie" vaults them in at #20, proving that sometimes I can really vibe with their less soundscapey songs. It's their 4th entry to date. Also returning this week is Maddy Jane, who also had scored 3 entries in quick-ish succession just all within the space of the last time Warpaint had charted. This time she adds her 4th with "It's A Lot" at #24. Proving the current entry is not a fluke, Body Type are at it again finding new ways to make excitement with their frantic rock. "Buoyancy" is in at #30 to give them 3 entries to date. Lastly we do have a debut to the chart though it's an artist who's been around for quite a while now. That being Rex Orange County who returns the favour so to speak to Tyler, The Creator who of course gave him a guest spot on "Flower Boy". This time around it's "OPEN A WINDOW" at #37, which is Tyler's 6th entry to date.
It's a bad week for Hatchie, not only has "Giving The World Away" not climbed, but also "Quicksand" has been ousted from #1, dropping down to #2. In its place we have BENEE, whose "Never Ending" has now become her 2nd #1 hit, after "Soaked" in 2018. Also rising in the all-caps stakes is CHISEKO, with "CARE" now up to #3. Mitski is down to #4 and The Beths are down to #5. Lizzy McAlpine has jumped into the top 10 for the first time with "reckless driving" matching the peak of "I Know The End" which I think it sounds a little bit like.
NEW ENTRIES
For the 3rd year in a row, Teen Jesus and the Jean Teasers have an entry on the chart. They'll be aiming to get their highest to date as they've already gotten pretty close to the #18 peak of "Desk Chair" from 2020. This time it's "Girl Sports" at #19. Next up it's a first time entry for Bugs. "Alone Again" does the trick at #29. It's also funny coincidence time because you might know Bugs for covering Mallrat that one time, and anyway here's Mallrat. She's now up to 3 entries on the chart with "Teeth" in at #35. Lastly we go back to one of the biggest veterans of the chart just in terms of entry span. It was in 2008 that Augie March first charted with "Watch Me Disappear", and they've irregularly charted ever since then. 4 years removed from their last entry, "The Derangement" gives them a 5th in at #38.
It's a 2nd week at #1 for BENEE. Her previous #1 hit "Soaked" spent 4 weeks at #1 so it will be QUITE INTERESTING to see how the two end up stacking up. Her competition is even more fascinated by all-caps than she is, as CHISEKO rises to #2 with "CARE". But showing we can balance things out, we've got Lizzy McAlpine at #3 with "reckless driving". Hatchie is down 2 places to #4 with "Quicksand", while CASS is up to a new high of #5. Jumping into the top 10 for the first time ever is Sigrid with "It Gets Dark", while Denzel Curry gets his 2nd & slowthai's 3rd with "Zatoichi".
NEW ENTRIES
It's been a good return to the chart for Melody's Echo Chamber. She had a top 10 hit with "Looking Backward" and now as that winds down, she has a replacement entry with "Alma" at #22. This makes 5 entries to date. The rest of the artists here are completely new to the chart. The first is completely new to me, with BOY SODA getting to #27 with "LONELY". Next up is a first time entry for Meg Mac, who I think I've warmed to in recent times. She comes with "On Your Mind" at #32. Lastly it's a perhaps surprising entry for Vanessa Amorosi who has also never charted before but really caught me by surprise on "Crash Now Burn" at #38.
Is it a "Never Ending" thing we have here? Well as of yet it is, BENEE notches up a 3rd week at #1. She has peculiar competition though as none of the next 3 artists have ever had a #1 hit before. Lizzy McAlpine is primed to make the move with "reckless driving" up to #2, while CHISEKO drops to #3 with "CARE". Then the upper/lower case shenanigans continue as CASS has moved up to #4 with "vulnerable", swapping out Hatchie down to #5. For the first time in 8 years, Warpaint have a top 10 hit, as "Stevie" moves up to #7 (their 3rd top 10 hit), while Teen Jesus and the Jean Teasers do it for the first time period, with "Girl Sports" to #10.
NEW ENTRIES
Perhaps Phoebe Bridgers didn't take too kindly to the comparison I made recently and is attempting to assert her dominance. It's the only logical way to explain how rapidly she has returned to the chart now with "Sidelines" at #22. It's her 3rd entry to date. With no relevant omissions, Telenova had a great 2021 in these parts. Maybe they'll have a great 2022 as well since they've found a way to do that "We Are The People"/"Following The Sun" type beat and make it fresh on "Why Do I Keep You?" at #25, their 3rd entry to date. The occasionally unrecognised Maggie Rogers has also returned to show that her #1 hit was not a fluke, nor was her narrow second charting entry. Perhaps she'll land somewhere in the middle with "That's Where I Am" as it enters at #31. But as if to challenge Phoebe Bridgers again despite no real sonic reason to warrant it this time, Lizzy McAlpine has also returned to the chart with another entry. She's filling my chart with so much random dude collaborations that I'm expecting JP Saxe or someone to show up next. This week's random dude is FINNEAS who has not technically charted before but suffice to say has contributed to many entries prior, best new artist 2022? "hate to be lame" is in at #35.
BENEE is #1 for a 4th week at #1, which is the second time she's done it. She's kept Lizzy McAlpine at #2 for a second week with "reckless driving", or maybe she just crashed into a wall lol. CASS slides up to #3 with "vulnerable" and Sigrid cracks the top 5 with "It Gets Dark" at #4. CHISEKO closes up the top 5 with "CARE" at #5. Maddy Jane moves up to #10 with "It's A Lot" which is now her 3rd top 10 hit.
NEW ENTRIES
It's early days and maybe there'll be a better way to clear it, but I believe that we may have this year's Madison Avenue's cover of "Reminiscing". On the other hand, we've got a holding pattern of needing at least 1 smooth jazz-influenced song in the chart at a time, with "Fuel For The Fire" dropping out and needing to be replaced by Tash's first ever entry "Complacent" at #23. I am several months late to this but it's time to make up for lost ground from Nilüfer Yanya who scores her first ever entry with "midnight sun" at #27. Keeping up the new entering artists to the chart, it's a first time ever for Vancouver Sleep Clinic, who is actually Australian but let's pretend that Canada keeps winning anyway. "The Flow" enters at #32. Lastly it's the only artist here who has charted before, with WILSN finally scoring a second entry at #38 with "Tell Me".
Zoomers continue to run the world of the chart. BENEE has been ousted after 4 weeks at #1 with "Never Ending", and swaps places with last week's #1, "reckless driving" by Lizzy McAlpine. The rest of the upper end is pretty relaxed, CASS holds #3 and Sigrid is at #4. On the less relaxed side, Teen Jesus and the Jean Teasers are up to a new high of #5 with "Girl Sports". There's also Melody's Echo Chamber scoring a 4th top 10 hit to date, and 2nd for 2022 with "Alma" up to #9.
NEW ENTRIES
It's a pretty crazy turn of events this week. The prevalence of upper & lower case titles often throws a spanner into my search for multiple appearing titles. This time around we have done it so much that it's starting to spring up on this side of the table. Eagle-brained readers will recall in 2018 that Nas had a top 5 hit with "everything", and now Kehlani has an entry with her own lowercase "everything". It's the top debut of the week and enters at #22, giving her 3 entries to date. Sigrid put out a new album this week. I have not heard it yet though I did chance across "A Driver Saved My Night", definitely a song for all the retro gamers around the world. It enters at #28 to give her 3 entries to date as well. A band that probably don't get their dues on these parts (by which I mean my own) are Hot Chip. They narrowly charted once a few years ago but nothing really of note has happened. Maybe "Down" will get things going for them as it's now their highest ever entry at #31. I don't got anything here but it's been a slow climb up for Teenage Dads to get their first ever entry at #36 with "Exit Sign". Lastly it's been an even slower climb for merci, mercy, who following a big hit last year, now has a second with "Sick To My Stomach" at #37.
It is in fact a second week at #1 for Lizzy McAlpine. BENEE is therefore #2 for a second week (although it's really a 3rd because she was also there 6 weeks ago). Sigrid jumps up to #3 with "It Gets Dark", while Teen Jesus and the Jean Teasers are right behind at #4 with "Girl Sports". Warpaint rise up to #5 with "Stevie", only their 2nd song to ever get this high, after "Love Is To Die". We've also got Phoebe Bridgers climbing up to #10 with "Sidelines" which is her 2nd top 10 hit to date.
NEW ENTRIES
It is a certainly varied set of new arrivals this week. 2 days ago I would have no reason to believe that My Chemical Romance would be in the mext with this. Alas they arrive in full stride for the first time in over 11 years. "The Foundations Of Decay" enters at #14 which is their 3rd ever entry. This week is split between former #1 artists and artists who if you ask me 24 hours from now I might not be able to remember their name. This split is met perfectly on this second entry which takes the best of both worlds. I definitely would has assumed this was a goofy novelty song before I heard it but instead it's quite intense and engaging. First timer Xavier Dunn teams up with last year #1 scorer Eluera, ending her one-hit wonder status as "Margot Robbie" enters at #29. Lastly we have an artist whose name I'm not certain how to pronounce but it hasn't compromised her art as Mwanje enters at #36 with "Dandelions".

reckless driving (feat Ben Kessler) {2 Weeks @ #1}
It's a 3rd week at #1 for Lizzy McAlpine. Rising to the challenge this week is Sigrid with "It Gets Dark" at #2. Sigrid can take consolation that her 2nd song on the chart is slightly higher than Lizzy McAlpine's 2nd song. BENEE has just the one song on the chart and it's at #3 this week, followed by Warpaint who creep up a little higher to #4 with "Stevie". Teen Jesus and the Jean Teasers are currently sticking to "Girl Sports" as their only song here at #5. Also this week My Chemical Romance jump up to #7 with "The Foundations Of Decay", which is their 3rd top 10 hit.
NEW ENTRIES
Little known fact is that Kendrick Lamar has had more chart entries than anyone else in these parts. It sure would be weird if he dropped a new album and all of a sudden there was nothing to be seen on it. Alas here we are with his 23rd & 24th chart entries, despite the fact that our national charts would have you believe that these two particular songs do not exist. Yes it's Ariana Grande syndrome all over again. First up we have "Mirror" at #16 and then "Mother I Sober" at #23, the latter is also interesting because Portishead briefly appeared on this chart in its very, very, very early days in 2008 with "The Rip", and Beth Gibbons has not been seen on there again until now, madness. For more regular programming, Julia Jacklin is back on the charts. Though it's with one of her more mellow cuts which is not so common actually. I gotta hand it to "Lydia Wears A Cross" though, which is now her 5th entry at #30. 2 years ago I got especially into two songs by Lolo Zouaï, which got a little weird at times when I'd sometimes forget which one it was that I liked a fair bit more than the other, really puts impostor syndrome on yourself as someone who can even convince yourself of what you like. For the first time since then she's back on the chart, and it's with the even more unusual "Give Me A Kiss" at #35. Lastly just sneaking in, we get that whole problem when there are some absolute TikTok bangers that are super old and I can't justify putting them on my radar. How good is "Freaks" by Surf Curse though? That's not to diminish "Sugar" though which goes for a fairly different vibe and I gotta say it does a good job at that too, and it finally gets in at #40.

Time flies and it's already been 4 weeks at #1 for Lizzie McAlpine's "reckless driving" (editor note: she is not the one partaking in it in the song). Sigrid holds #2 for a 2nd week while Warpaint move up to #3. BENEE drops down to #4 with "Never Ending", while My Chemical Romance are now at #5 with "The Foundations Of Decay". Telenova & Kehlani are both scoring their 2nd top 10 hits this week with "Why Do I Keep You?" and "everything".

Does this count as a single? I'm not even doing a trolling bit here but I can't actually properly buy this even though it is by all other accounts a single. In the plot twist of 2022, Metric released a nearly 11 minute long song a few weeks back, and it kinda goes hard. "Doomscroller" is their 14th entry and it's in at #22. We have a more modern return to the chart this week from Ngaiire, who last hit #1 last year! Now she's back with her 3rd entry to date "Fuchsia" at #29. Now we enter the world of I don't know who these people are but issa bop. So we have the first time entry of piri & Tommy Villiers with their garage house kinda thing "Words" at #35.

Lizzy McAlpine has notched up 5 weeks at #1 with "reckless driving", this is the equal longest reign of the year. Sigrid is stuck at #2 for a 3rd week, while My Chemical Romance climb up to #3 with "The Foundations Of Decay". Warpaint are down a spot to #4 as is BENEE at #5. Moving into the top 10 this week is Tash, for the first time with "Complacent".

It's a fun time. It's not often that I'll end up going back to something and charting it long after the fact. When I first heard "Personal Message" I was a little nonplussed and moved on quickly. Ever since Melody's Echo Chamber's album has come out though, it's clicked with me in a big way. It's in at #19 and is her xth entry. It's happened again somehow! If one Ocean Alley debut was hard to process, how about two? In fact "Deepest Darkness" enters at #28 and immediately becomes their highest entry. It's also time for the classic moment of collaboration between two artists I've never heard of at #35. This time it's edith & Taj Ralph and they're "Falling Away". Finally we have our other token veteran to the chart. Holly Humberstone picked up 3 entries last year, and now she's got a 4th with "Sleep Tight".

It's now been 6 weeks at #1 for Lizzy McAlpine. She's now being challenged by My Chemical Romance attempting to get their 2nd #1 hit with "The Foundations Of Decay" now up to #2. Sigrid moves down to #3, while Warpaint retain #4. Kehlani jumps up to #5 for a new high with "everything". Kendrick Lamar has "Mirror" moving up to #8, which for all of you keeping track is his 13th top 10 hit.

On the topic of large numbers of entries, it's time for another new Metric song. It's definitely competing to be one of the most Metric songs ever. "What Feels Like Eternity" enters at #19 and is their 15th entry to date. Next we have a newbie to the chart. It's another one of those extremely pop songs that probably go nowhere in the long run, but hey weirder things have happened. Welcome PRINS at #31 with "On the low (shh!)". Finally it's a 2nd time entry for two artists, and with a song that I sometimes get mixed up with the last debut even though they don't sound much alike. In any case it's certainly different to what you'd expect from the words 'with Travis Barker'. renforshort comes in at #38 with "we'll make this okay"

It's been 7 weeks now and Lizzy McAlpine is still at #1 with "reckless driving". Will My Chemical Romance be the ones to change it, or will they remain stuck at #2 with "The Foundations Of Decay". Kehlani is now up to #3 with "everything" which displaces Sigrid down to #4 and Warpaint down to #5. Kendrick Lamar also continues to be at it, quickly scoring a 14th top 10 hit and thus only remaining on the unlucky number for a single week, now that "Mother I Sober" is #8. He's not the only one with two songs in the top 10 though, as Sigrid is also up to #10 with "A Driver Saved My Night", which is her 2nd top 10 hit.
NEW ENTRIES
We're nearly 6 months in and The Beths still have the highest debut of the year with "A Real Thing". They came somewhat close to matching it again with their new song "Silence Is Golden" which is red hot entering at #17, those are some tasty riffs. It's their 4th entry to date. It's that time of the year or so when I have to copy & paste a rude Serbian word into my notes because KUČKA is back. She now has 9 entries to date as the super wacky "Messed Up" enters at #31. Lastly we have what I thought was yet another one of those random pleasant psychedelic rock tracks but it's been growing on me and now giving me some serious Future Bible Heroes vibes, which is neat. Dorsal Fins make their debut to the chart at #34 with "S.O.S (Stick Of Sage)".

This chart is remarkably vintage. Well not really but after quite a while of some unexpected faces at the top, things are returning to more typical affairs. Firstly, My Chemical Romance are at #1 with "The Foundations Of Decay". This is their 2nd ever #1 hit and it's also the 2nd biggest ever gap between #1 hits, behind Karnivool. Lizzy McAlpine drops to #2 while Kehlani holds at #3. The rest of the top 5 belongs to Kendrick Lamar, with "Mother I Sober" at #4 and "Mirror" at #5. Lower down, Melody's Echo Chamber is back in the top 10 again, this time with "Personal Message", at #10, her 3rd top 10 this year and 5th overall.
NEW ENTRIES
It's about as close as you can get to a year ago since WILLOW first entered the chart in 2021 with "Lipstick", which wound up being a top 20 hit. She will attempt to do the same thing again making good pace already with "<maybe> it's my fault" at #23. I don't have anything interesting to say or that I know about Zach Bryan except that this song just hits the spot, so "Something In The Orange" enters at #33. Feels like it's been a long time coming for Kota Banks who charts now for the first time at #37 with "Dreamhigh". Finally we have something of a throwback simply because it's been quite some time since Florence + The Machine last charted. That last time was just shy of 7 years ago with "Queen Of Peace", but the drought has been ended by "Dream Girl Evil" at #39. It's their 8th entry to date.

It's a pretty low impact week so probably not worth checking out but hey since you're here, what's a little more scrolling. My Chemical Romance have a 2nd week at #1 with "The Foundations Of Decay". Lizzy McAlpine still holds #2 but Kendrick Lamar is now up to #3 with "Mother I Sober". He also still has "Mirror" at #5 and inbetween is Kehlani's "everything" at #4. Also in a week of adding to the pile, we've got new top 10 hits for The Beths & Metric, with "Silence Is Golden" being the 4th top 10 hit for the former, and "Doomscroller" the 6th for the latter.

We've got a surprise return to the chart this week. 6 years ago Princess Chelsea made a brief appearance with "Morning Sun". This week she's with Mattyeux to an all new chart high of #28 with "Sometimes". I'm gonna drop the biggest truth bomb observation about this song that nobody has mentioned anywhere that I can see. Maggie Rogers' new-ish single "Want Want" sounds a lot like "Time To Pretend". Maybe that works to her favour as it becomes her 4th ever entry at #35.

It's another steady week at the top, which benefits My Chemical Romance who notch a 3rd week at #1 with "The Foundations Of Decay", which ties it with "Na Na Na (Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na)"'s reign at #1. Lizzy McAlpine holds at #2 which makes for an impressive 12 weeks in the top 2. For fun reference, the last song to manage this was "Golden To Thrive". Kendrick Lamar holds #3, but rising fast is The Beths with "Silence Is Golden" at #4. Melody's Echo Chamber is also up to #5 with "Personal Message", which is their first time in the top 5 this year. Last week Metric scored their 6th top 10 hit, this week they're up to 7 with "What Feels Like Eternity" at #10.

Our new source for new bangers is apparently new songs by artists who had that one old song blow up on TikTok. A couple months ago Surf Curse were in the chart, so why not bring The Rare Occasions to the table because my gosh "Notion" is an absolute tune and hey, their new song "Seasick" goes down pretty well as well at #25. It feels like they've had multiple entries but rather they're just very good at not quite getting there. So it's a big day for MUNA as "What I Want" enters at #32, which overtakes their previous entry "Number One Fan" to be their highest charter. Lastly we have another two time entrant, although this time it's so recent that the first song is still charting. Tash is back(?) though, with "New Thing" entering at #37, while "Complacent" still sits in the top 20.

We all love a belated success story. Not extremely much, but this week The Beths get their first ever #1 hit with "Silence Is Golden". I was about to do a big search to find the last NZ artist to go to #1 and then I remembered BENEE did so not very long ago. This jump up means a jump down elsewhere, with My Chemical Romance down to #2, Lizzy McAlpine down to #3, and Kendrick Lamar down to #5, as Melody's Echo Chamber climbs up between to #4 with "Personal Message". We do not have a new Metric song in the top 10 this week, but we do have Ngaiire, scoring her 3rd with "Fuchsia" at #9.
NEW ENTRIES
While The Beths are celebrating the top spot, they also nearly lost another top spot, for the highest debut of the year, where "The Real Thing" debuted at #13 (while "Silence Is Golden" is now 5th highest at #17. We fill in that last missing gap below it as Carla Wehbe makes her first entry. It seems like a slight departure from her usual ouvre, including a nearly chart entry with "Somebody Loves You" about a year and a half ago. This more perky single "is forever off the table?" has endorsement in the YouTube comments from Gretta Ray, and also debuts at an impressive #15. Next is a return for an artist who did actually make the chart, and quite recently too. Vancouver Sleep Clinic had a moderate hit with "The Flow" which reached #26 in May this year. Now he's hit a new high with "Wanderlust" which enters at #22. Also charting alongside "The Flow" was "Sick To My Stomach" for merci, mercy. That wasn't her first entry, but her 2nd after top 10 hit "Winnie Crush". This time she returns with "Black Cloud" which is clearly leaning into my strong interest in songs that go big on the bridge (or maybe it's just "reckless driving") which basically singlehandedly makes the song. It's new at #32.

Melody's Echo Chamber climbs again to #3 with "Personal Message", which pushes Lizzy McAlpine down to #4 with "reckless driving". Metric have climbed up to #5 with "Doomscroller" which also means that they're keeping themselves out of the top 5. There are a lot of familiar names I start to see a lot in the New Music Friday sprawls. One of those is JVKE although I can't say I can recall any of his songs before. Colour me surprised with this latest one though, as "golden hour" is a whole lot more ambitious than I'd have guessed going in. It enters at #21 for his first ever entry. It's typical fashion for me that a Violent Soho song grows on me extremely late. As luck would have it, I was quick to taking to "Kamikaze" and it's their 3rd ever entry at #25. Then we're back to artists whom I know nothing about. In fairness he doesn't seem to have that many songs out. But New Zealand's own Dallas Tamaira makes a good first impression with "Just Fine" which finally climbs into the chart at #35. Lastly we have Julia Jacklin back as the only artist here who could be considered regular chart fodder. "Lydia Wears A Cross" just left the chart but now she's replaced it with "I Was Neon" at #37, giving her 6 entries all up.

What a week, but anyway nothing changes at the top as The Beths are still at #1 for a 3rd week with "Silence Is Golden". They have a new challenger which I'll get to later at #2, but that's followed by stability at #3 for Melody's Echo Chamber, and also Lizzy McAlpine still going strong with "reckless driving" at #4. My Chemical Romance finish the top 5 off with "The Foundations Of Decay". We've also got a climb into the top 10 this week for Carla Wehbe, coming a long way from her #273 EOY finish in 2020 as now "is forever off the table?" has vaulted up to #7 for her first ever top 10 hit.

This might not feel like much given what the last several months of this chart have been, but suffice to say that this past week I went on a big Lizzy bender. Never more than now have I gotten wrapped up in that cliche of 'damn, I felt that' but also a strong sense of music as a comfort food. Anyway, her new album is great, but something that caught me off guard was seeing that "ceilings" was currently the most popular track on it. Not a track I could recall from the title so I might have dismissed it as just playlist shenanigans, but then I just kept seeing people attest to it. Going back to it, yeah, it certainly hits on several levels that I'll probably have to write up on at the end of the year. In any case, I stan the super sad acoustic guitar bops. "ceilings" enters at #2 which is the highest debut since Jessie Ware entered at #1 with "Midnight" which will always look funny in hindsight because "Golden To Thrive" also debuted in the top 5 that same week. It's her 2nd top 10 hit to date and 3rd entry overall, all three of which are still on the chart of course. Anyway I hope you like rhymes because we're moving on from Lizzy to talk about Kizzy. That's not me forcing a bit, that's genuinely a nickname she gets referred to by just as much if not more than her actual name. She's also not a real person. You might recall near the end of 2019 that there was a big hit on this chart with a very similar pedigree, "Invincible Rainbow Arrow". That is the cue to say that Uchikoshi's sequel came out a month ago and oh boy is it a wild ride. But it's also a wild ride that's grounded somewhat by covering a lot of the same beats as the first "AI: The Somnium Files" game, so far as to say that there's a random pop song with cryptic lyrics that keeps popping up. It doesn't even feel like a spoiler to say that this 'Grand Finale' version exists (although the video certainly is) because I think everyone playing the game would've expected it. In any case unlike with "Invincible Rainbow Arrow", this is the only full version of the song that actually exists. At long last, ProZD has made my chart. In case you were wondering why it took so long for this to appear on my chart, one is that I was very slow to get through the game and two is that the song is absolutely cringe in the highest order and requires a lot of stomach power to get through the first verse. The chorus absolutely goes hard though and I've found myself coming back to it a lot, so much so that it'd be a crime to exclude it from the chart. If nothing else, one of the chart's biggest one hit wonders, Keisuke Ito, finally has a second entry, although it's not officially credited to him on digital platforms, which means we get the ultimate cringe of seeing the words Kizuna and Her Heart-Whole Homies on this chart at #27 with "Half To Whole", I wouldn't want it any other way. The Buoys have their 2nd entry to date with "Red Flags" at #30. HEAVY CHEST also has his first ever entry, possibly aided by featuring BENEE who is here just in time with her previous entry falling out. Her 9th entry to date is the oddly titled "Sunday926" at #37.

There is a little known cardinal rule on this chart. It's so little known that I had to check to confirm my suspicion that it even is a trend. But it is indeed, so I can say with authority that for the past nearly 14 years, any time a song debuts at #2, it will climb to #1 on the following week. I'm not one to break tradition right now, so the spoils go to Lizzy McAlpine, whose "ceilings" climbs to #1 this week, giving her a 2nd #1 this year. Crazy coincidence that it happens on the same day she uploaded an acoustic version of it to YouTube. It swaps places with The Beths' "Silence Is Golden" which is down to #2, while Melody's Echo Chamber holds at #3. Lizzy also has "reckless driving" at #4, 1 week away from tying "Golden To Thrive"'s record for most weeks in the top 5 if you can believe it. Carla Wehbe is new to the top 5, logging a first week there with "is forever off the table?" at #5.
NEW ENTRIES
A week ago by complete accident I stumbled upon the fact that Mr Little Jeans released a new album a couple of months ago. It's a bit more mellow than her first album, but I did find myself taking a strong liking to the song "Intentions", which was released as a single just before the album came out. If it were two weeks ago, it'd have an impressive claim of the equal highest debut of the year, but nonetheless it's instantly the 2nd highest charting of her now 6 entries at #13. This sentence is for nobody but myself, but imagine you found a sweet spot between "Bags" and "Petty". Sounds like a pretty rad idea, and that's what New Zealand's Blake seems to have stumbled upon, which brings in "You Don't Decide" at #31, her first ever entry. Remember r.em.edy? No? Well she had a minor chart hit in these parts at the start of the year with "Questions". She returns this week for a second entry on the feature artist side of Ivoris, and it's a song that sounds nothing like her last entry. It enters at #38.

reckless driving (feat Ben Kessler) {7 Weeks @ #1}
"ceilings" is #1 for a 2nd week. This also means that Lizzy McAlpine has spent 9 weeks at #1 in 2022, matching Gretta Ray's efforts in 2021, and the last time someone's done better is CHVRCHES' 10 weeks at #1 in 2013. Rocketing up the chart is Carla Wehbe's "is forever off the table?" to #2, buoyed by the potential of being the 2nd ever #1 co-written by someone named Chloe. The Beths drop a spot to #3 and Melody's Echo Chamber is down to #4. There's more Lizzy stats too because as noted last week, "reckless driving" now ties "Golden To Thrive" for the longest ever run in the top 5, though sitting at a dangerous #5 position. Mr Little Jeans scores her 2nd ever top 10 hit with "Intentions" up to #7, and behind her is a first for Vancouver Sleep Clinic at #9 with "Wanderlust". Mattyeux & Princess Chelsea also had their first top 10 hit last week and I forgot to mention that.
NEW ENTRIES
Here's a fun little coincidence for you. To my knowledge, the first time "ceilings" was played live before it was released, was during a show when Lizzy was supporting dodie. Anyway here's dodie getting her first ever entry. "Got Weird" to me is like what if Jamie Woon's "Sharpness" had more pop sensibility to it, and it's in at #23. We next take one of those rare trips to Australia's capital city, as Sputnik Sweetheart presumably dress up like a panda to do the "Lindy Hop" at #29. "Golden To Thrive" might be able to boast records, but Jessie Ware can always take solace in having outdebuted it that week, which is in fact the last time there was a #1 debut on this chart. She's back as she regularly is with her 7th entry "Free Yourself" at #33. Lastly we have the belated sneaking into the chart for first time entrant Jude Korab, whose new song is also quite good. "Night Riding" lands at #38.

It's a 3rd week at #1 for "ceilings". This is Lizzy's 10th week at #1 in 2022 alone, which if she lasts for 1 more week, will tie the actual record for that particular stipulation which Grimes achieved in 2019, though it's easy to forget that one since she did it with two songs released in different years. Carla Wehbe is stuck at #2 for another week with Mr Little Jeans rocketing behind with "Intentions" of maybe going higher than #3, which she's done only once before. The Beths are down a spot to #4 and Melody's Echo Chamber is also down a spot to #5. Moving up into the top 10 this week is JVKE for the first time with "golden hour" at #10.
NEW ENTRIES
Here is the obligatory Beyonce chart entry from her new album that's really quite good. "VIRGO'S GROOVE" enters at #27 and is officially her 8th entry although you could say 9th to include "APESHIT". It's new at #27. Now it's time for the continued obligatory diminishing returns that come with getting a #1 hit on your first try. Eluera is back again to score a 3rd entry, this time on her own with "Madeline" at #34. Lastly it's a long time return for two artists who haven't featured in years. Ellie Goulding only charted once in 2015 and Big Sean charted 4 times around the same era. Now Ellie has her highest ever charter with "Easy Lover" in at #37.

It's a 4th week at #1 for "ceilings", which combined with the 7 weeks for "reckless driving" makes for a combined 11 weeks at #1 for Lizzy in 2022, equalling Grimes' effort in 2019. It's a very steady affair at the top though this week, Carla Wehbe is holding #2, Mr Little Jeans is #3 again and The Beths retain #4. Vancouver Sleep Clinic is up to #5 for the first time with "Wanderlust". Moving into the top 10 is "Half To Whole", so if The Buoys want to reach them, they'll have to keep up.
NEW ENTRIES
It's a funny week this week, at least in terms of the top two debuts. We have some guy I don't know and also BENEE. This allows "fun out of it" to enter at #25 and become her 10th chart entry to date. But you think I'm done here, because actually we've got another one! We have some guy I don't know and also BENEE. This allows "Light" to enter at #30 and become her 11th chart entry to date, and it also means she becomes the first artist in 2022 to have 4 debuts, with 3 of them being collaborations. Speaking of collaborations, remember that time KAYTRANADA teamed up with Anderson .Paak and it basically ruled? Well they're here to try it again with "Twin Flame" at #36, which becomes KAYTRANADA's 5th entry and Anderson .Paak's 9th. Lastly we have the return of The Butterfly Effect who have been steadily putting out new singles and I've been steadily forgetting to pay them mind. They did pretty well in their last appearance in 2019, and now they have a 5th chart entry with "Visiting Hours" at #39.

It's a 5th week at #1 for "ceilings" which gives Lizzy McAlpine the most weeks at #1 in a single year for any artist. Carla Wehbe on the other hand is chasing dubiously for the most weeks at #2 as it's now been 4 weeks for "is forever off the table?". Mr Little Jeans is also still at #3 with "Intentions", while JVKE climbs up to #4 with "golden hour". Vancouver Sleep Clinic retains the #5 slot again. Racing into the top 10 this week trying to keep up is in fact The Buoys, wouldn't it be great if I'd seen the TV show and been able to reference that instead?
NEW ENTRIES
It was a solid outing here for Magdalena Bay on their last album from 2021 which got 3 chart entries. They can now technically add a 4th via the deluxe edition, as new single "All You Do" comes in at #17. I had a funny realisation that while I am currently charting a song from AI:NI that I might potentially be able to chart a character from the game as well technically. That hasn't come into fruition yet technically but we do have a character from another Uchikoshi game. It's everyone's favourite dude from 999, "Seven". This gives Jess Day her 2nd ever entry, after the first "Rabbit Hole" which I always associate with my time overseas since I heard it in a hotel room in Minnesota. She's in at #30 this week. Finally sneaking in, it's Hockey Dad picking up what is actually only their 3rd entry to date with "T's To Cross" at #37.

It's a 6th week at #1 for "ceilings", which puts it one week away from having the longest reign of 2022, which I'm sure the current holder of that title is furious about. Mr Little Jeans moves on up though with "Intentions" now at #2, her equal highest ever charter. Carla Wehbe is back down a spot to #3, while JVKE & Vancouver Sleep Clinic hold their ground.
NEW ENTRIES
Right so as is made very clear, the song from AI: The Somnium Files Nirvana Initiative is in the top 10, but wouldn't it be funny if there were more of that. There isn't, but on the other hand, the main character in that game who does appear on that song is Mizuki and wouldn't you know, we have a new artist who just happens to be called MIZUKI on the chart this week. She gets her first ever entry with "We're Not Friends" at #20. It's been a solid year and a half since she last appeared but Mia Wray has scored her 2nd chart entry this week, and it's quite a sonic pivot. "Evidence" does well though and enters at #27. Purely existing to make sure some databases are disrupted but also so I don't run out of hip-hop songs on my chart for the time being, we have another first time entry with 0800 and "VAPOUR" at #35. Lastly it's the return of Telenova with "Scarlet", notably spelt differently to the last debut of that sort of name on this chart. It's in at #37 to give them 4 entries to date.

reckless driving (feat Ben Kessler) {7 Weeks @ #1}
It's 7 weeks at #1 for "ceilings", that makes it the equal longest running #1 of the year, tied with "reckless driving". Poetic perhaps? That all depends on whether or not Mr Little Jeans (or someone else I suppose) can get over the line as "Intentions" is stuck at #2 again. Carla Wehbe is also holding #3 while JVKE is #4, and the only top 5 movement is Blake taking her new top 10 hit I forgot to mention last week, "You Don't Decide" up to #5. Considering that the rest of the top 5 debuted at an average position of around #13, she's done well with her song that took 5 weeks just to reach #31. I shall also remember to mention the top 10 arrival this week courtesy of dodie, getting there for the first time with "Got Weird", meaning now 7 of the top 10 currently are there with their first ever top 10 hit, and 5 with their first hit, period.
NEW ENTRIES
Big out of nowhere arrival this week, but this is a song that took like 10 seconds if not less into a first listen for me to immediately recognise it as my vibe. It's a first time entry for Shanae, who used to go by MADAM3EMPRESS, and it shows that the chart is kind to fitting the pattern of 'I____IONS' as "Illusions" comes through at #12, the second highest debut of the year, and highest that's an actually super fresh song. If an artist charts once per album it's not usually particularly egregious but if those albums are spaced apart quite a bit then maybe it does. Case in point, Yeah Yeah Yeahs are back with their 3rd ever entry, 9 years since their last and 13 years since their first, no skipped albums between! "Burning" does the trick at #31. Lastly we have a song that frankly bemused me for being one of the most Australian songs I've heard and what was that about your nipples dude? Also if you've ever wanted to know what a combination of Daniel from Gyroscope and Kevin Mitchell might sound like...well have I got a singer for you! The Beefs who are sadly not from Western Australia enter at #36 with "In The Blood".

We have a new #1 and yet again it's actually one that dropped months ago. Mr Little Jeans has her first ever #1 with "Intentions". "ceilings" is bumped down to #2 and it feels like the end of a movie I've seen before. Carla Wehbe holds at #3 and our two RHYMING top 5 entrants have swapped places, with Blake up to #4 and JVKE down to #5. Moving into the top 10 this week is Shanae whose big debut from last week "illusions" is up to #8, while Magdalena Bay have their first ever top 10 hit with "All You Do" at #10.
NEW ENTRIES
Absolute shock alert. We've already had Ocean Alley bizarrely score two hits and now Meg Mac has done the same. In similar fashion, this second one has immediately entered about as high as the other one got. This time it's "Matter Of Time" in at #21. It's been a little bit of a moment between drinks for Sloan Peterson. After a handful of entries in the late 2010s, she's back for the first time in 2.5 years with "Sick & Selfish" at #28. I had the belated realisation the other day that this song sounds like a Daya song. Probably "Sit Still Look Pretty" but maybe that's just the most recent one I heard. Anyway, Blake is back with more autotune than ever before on "CPU" at #36 to give her a second entry. Speaking of NZ artists, Princess Chelsea is riding this second imperial phase to get another song on the chart. This time she's on her own with "Forever Is A Charm" at #38, which is her 3rd entry to date.

There's more than one "Intention" and in fact more than one week at #1 for "Intentions" too. "ceilings" is at #2 for a 10th straight week in the top 2. Blake climbs up to #3 with "You Don't Decide", while Carla Wehbe moves down to #4. dodie climbs into the top 5 with "Got Weird" at #5. Moving into the top 10 this week is MIZUKI's "We're Not Friends" at #10.

It's a quiet week this week and in fact it even sounds pretty chill right now. A lesson in lazy research is that you can't always just look at an artist's top cities on Spotify and determine that they're Australian. Which is to say that Dora Jar is not, but she does get her first ever entry with "Bump". Adding onto her growing collection, merci, mercy is now up to 4, with the latest being "Into You" at #34.

reckless driving (feat Ben Kessler) {7 Weeks @ #1}
Mr Little Jeans is #1 for a 3rd week running, which is three weeks longer than her previous best. If you picked a random week of this year so far there would be a more than 50% chance that Lizzy McAlpine is in the top 2, and this is another one of those weeks as "ceilings" remains at #2, fending off Blake's "You Don't Decide" at #3. Shanae is creeping on up however with "illusions" now at #4, keeping dodie in place at #5. Beyonce scores her 4th ever top 10 hit with "VIRGO'S GROOVE" up to #10, the other three all being tracks from "Lemonade" in 2016.
NEW ENTRIES
It was just 10 months ago that WILSN first made a big impression on the chart with "You Know Better", a song that I will not include on the next Jeopardy! board I write but if you're reading this, consider that a miniscule hint as to what I might be doing with that. Anyway she might be vying to make late year hits a thing for her as she's now up to her 3rd chart entry with "If You Wanna Love Me" at #22. Big "I Can Hardly Make You Mine" by Cults vibes here. With one of those chart histories that just doesn't quite feel up to scratch of what it should be, Weyes Blood has only barely charted once before. She's already making improvements as newest single "It's Not Just Me, It's Everybody" reaches her to a new high of #32. It very narrowly ends "VIRGO'S GROOVE"'s 1 week reign as the longest song on the chart. Speaking of artists who've only charted once before, we've got the surprise return of KIAN. He had a surprisingly big hit a couple of years ago with "Sunbeam" going all the way into the top 5, and now comes through with "Come Through" at #35. It features a swathe of artists who I am not familiar with outside of the context of this song. I was going to remark with Weyes Blood that a fun thing about making personal charts is that just like the real chart, it's very easy to get yourself into a position where artists you love and absolutely would represent if you had the chance can frequently slip through the cracks and have you realise that you'd managed to skip over them the whole time. A relatively minor example of this is Alvvays who have NEVER charted before mainly because "Dreams Tonite" just couldn't quite go the distance which I regretted pretty quickly after the fact. We can somewhat amend these matters this week though as "Easy On Your Own?" gets them into the chart at #38, which itself was quite a slow and arduous climb.

Lizzy McAlpine
reckless driving (feat Ben Kessler) {7 Weeks @ #1}
For 4 weeks now Mr Little Jeans has sat at #1 with "Intentions". It adds to the collection of pluralised songs at the top with "illusions" moving up to #2. Lizzy McAlpine is down a spot to #3, and Blake is also down to #4. MIZUKI has of course overtaken her friend Kizuna by reaching the top 5, with "We're Not Friends", wait a minute. Making the top 10 for the first time ever is Meg Mac with "Matter Of Time" at #8.
NEW ENTRIES
It's a big week for New Zealand artists as it would seem. Or rather they own the first and last entries. The first is a first time entry for Villainy, which has the strong endorsement of simultaneously sounding like My Chemical Romance and Jimmy Eat World on "The Launch" at #20. It's time for the seemingly annual return of SG Lewis. He brings along the less generally annual entrance of Tove Lo, so for both of them this is their 3rd entry with "Call On Me" at #25. I don't believe I have ever charted any windmill scene bands, and I don't think this counts either. Nonetheless, These New South Whales get their first ever entry with "Rotten Sun" at #34. Lastly it's Alisa Xayalith scoring her 2nd entry this year with "I'll Be There" at #40, as she is somewhat an afficionado for low debuts.

Lizzy McAlpine
reckless driving (feat Ben Kessler) {7 Weeks @ #1}
We have a new #1 this week. It's one of those occasionally rare moments where an artist with only one chart entry gets to the top, which is a congrats to Shanae. The last time this happened was at the start of the year with tiffi, technically "reckless driving" was Lizzy's first entry but by the time it got to #1 she had a second entry, although I guess it's still Ben Kessler's only entry. "illusions" thus replaces "Intentions" and the two swap places in the top 2. MIZUKI is up to #3 with "We're Not Friends", which bumps "ceilings" down to #4. In this extremely relaxed and lethargic top 5 we've got Meg Mac belting out a storm at #5 with "Matter Of Time". Somewhere in the middle is the sole new entry to the top 10, with Sloan Peterson's "Sick & Selfish" up to #9, actually her first ever top 10 hit.
NEW ENTRIES
This new release nearly passed me by, but what would my chart be without a new BABYMETAL track? In case you were wondering, this is their 7th entry to date and it has the slightly cumbersome parsing of the title "Divine Attack - Shingeki -" which does not format itself the same way "Half to Whole -Grand Finale-" does so bear with me for this brief period that they share chart space. The new track is at #19. If I am known for many things, one of them might be a strong propensity to have Nessa Barrett appear on this chart despite I imagine a lot of people with similarly inclined views on music to me probably thinking this to be some horrible mistake. What can I say though? She weaves a nice tune here and there, and the latest here, "tired of california", I was digging before I even saw who it was by. It's miraculously her 4th entry, in at #26. Lastly I don't have anything to say except that this is probably the hardest title drop of 2022. EAST AV3 get their first ever entry with "WTFO" at #32.

Lizzy McAlpine
reckless driving (feat Ben Kessler) {7 Weeks @ #1}
This week is the second at the top for Shanae's "illusions". It's a true newbie class at the top as MIZUKI climbs up to #2 with "We're Not Friends". Mr Little Jeans is down to #3 with "Intentions", while Meg Mac moves up to #4 with "Matter Of Time". "ceilings" finishes off the top 5 at #5. Moving into the top 10 this week is also a first timer, Dora Jar with "Bump".
NEW ENTRIES
It's been a little while between drinks. Press Club picked up a few entries in the late 2010s, notably getting as high as #3 with "Suburbia". Now they're back for the first time in 3 years as "Endless Motion" enters at #29. This is less of a gap, as it was just 3 weeks ago that WILLOW last appeared on the chart. She's keeping her titling format intact with the next track "ur a <stranger>" which is her 3rd entry to date at #34. Now it's been a long wait, but for a different reason just because this particular song has taken its time to climb in. It's a relative veteran to the chart in Alex Lahey, who's now up to 6 entries on the chart thanks to "Congratulations" at #39.

Lizzy McAlpine
reckless driving (feat Ben Kessler) {7 Weeks @ #1}
Shanae has managed 3 weeks at #1 with "illusions" now. This means two things: Firstly that there have been plural song titles at #1 for the last 14 weeks, and secondly that she should fear MIZUKI who has a plural in her song title at #2. Meg Mac thinks it's only a "Matter Of Time" before the plural tyranny ends as she moves up to #3. Former #1's from Mr Little Jeans & Lizzy McAlpine finish off the top 5 this week. We've also got two new entries in the top 10, a first time for Villainy with "The Launch", and a second for WILSN with "If You Wanna Love Me". I also should probably shout out "reckless driving" which has squeaked by to match the all-time longevity record of 35 weeks set by "Faces" in 2012.
NEW ENTRIES
Here's a surprise on a few levels. The year is 2022 and Andy Bull is appearing on this chart for the firs time. Quite highly too, maybe because the song sounds a decent amount like Methyl Ethel but it does the trick. "Something I've Been Thinking" lands at #23. Maybe it's also a surprise that it's not the first time Paramore have charted, or maybe it is. Their previous chart performance is very blink and you miss it because "Monster" just barely snuck onto the chart in 2011. In any case they've hit a new personal high with "This Is Why" at #34. Lastly we have another debut by means of 'hey here's an artist I've never heard of but this song is good'. LEX lands at #38 with "Feel What I'm Feeling".

reckless driving (feat Ben Kessler) {7 Weeks @ #1}
It's now been a full 4 weeks at #1 for Shanae's "illusions". We've also got a full top 5 of artists who all had never had a top 5 hit on this chart before October. Meg Mac is up to #2 with "Matter Of Time", overtaking MIZUKI who drops to #3. Dora Jar is up to #4 with "Bump", and Sloan Peterson is just behind at #5 with "Sick & Selfish". On the other side of familiar though, BABYMETAL score a 6th top 10 hit with "Divine Attack - Shingeki -" at #10.
NEW ENTRIES
KUČKA continues to just gradually rack up the chart entries. This week she hits the big 10 milestone, with "Not There" landing at #22. The rest of these entrants are just a touch less familiar on the chart, with Suki Waterhouse scoring her first ever entry this week. Fuzzed out indie rock on this chart? It's more likely than you think. As a result, "Neon Signs" enters at #26. Next is a pairing of artists who technically have two entries each although you need a lot of quotation marks around that. Given her tendency to chart higher though, perhaps it's 070 Shake adding the beneficial star power to RAYE on "Escapism." at #32. It's been nearly 8 years since Freddie Gibbs first appeared on this chart with "Shitsville", which he has never been able to follow up on here until this week, with "Dark Hearted" landing at #37. Finally we have another one of those artists with a funny name although it didn't hit me until today for some reason, Sailor Goon lands at #39 with "RUTHLESS".

reckless driving (feat Ben Kessler) {7 Weeks @ #1}
In it for the long haul, Shanae has now managed 5 straight weeks at #1 with "illusions". Is it only a "Matter Of Time" for Meg Mac? We shall see but she's still at #2. Dora Jar moves up a spot to #3, bumping down MIZUKI to #4. Sloan Peterson remains at #5 with "Sick & Selfish".
NEW ENTRIES
If you were to mention a song called "Congratulations" that just barely snuck onto my chart recently, you'd have to be more specific, because before Alex Lahey did it, Elizabeth M. Drummond was 40 spots lower on the chart with her own song. She has significantly eclipsed that performance with her new song "Underground" that lands at #25. This new Pond song sure is cool! Wait, that's not Pond, it's Death By Denim, viewed from above! They're making their first impression on the chart this week with "Magic Daisy" at #32. I am nothing if not consistent, so popularity does not phase me. Simply put, I now have a history that includes charting Dove Cameron's music before she popped off on the charts, while she was popping off on the charts, and after she's popped off on the charts. What can I say, I like clownish sounding songs like "Bad Idea", which enters at #36. Inexplicably, I also now have a Six60 song on this chart. It's from their controversial album that isn't called "Six60" which must be why it's not performing too well, but "Hang On" just hits the right spot and debuts at #39.
You're not mistaking it, that's Shanae notching up a 6th week at #1 with "illusions". She's one week away from matching Liz Truss. She continues to hold off Meg Mac at #2, while Dora Jar is at #3 still. Behind this relatively moody top 3 we've got decidedly different Villainy, whose "The Launch" climbs up to #4. MIZUKI finishes the top 5 with "We're Not Friends". Joining the top 10 this time are several artists with charting form but never to this extent. First it's SG Lewis & Tove Lo on "Call On Me" at #9, and then Nessa Barrett with "tired of california" at #10.

This is a sort of notable week for me because it's been a very long time since the debuts are exclusively hip-hop. You have to go back to the very end of 2017 when the debuts were divided up between three BROCKHAMPTON entries + Baker Boy for the last time this has happened. It's easier to happen this week as there's just two, and speaking of BROCKHAMPTON, you could really fool me into believing the new Rich Brian & $NOT track is a lost cut from "GINGER". $NOT has charted before (alongside Kevin Abstract...) but Rich Brian has not. Together they do the trick with "VIVID" at #26. Lastly we have a return to the chart for Genesis Owusu, who has gotten considerably more famous since he last appeared here. "Get Inspired" is the latest and is his 3rd overall at #34.
For the 3rd time this year we have a 7 week #1, but for the first time this year, it's not Lizzy McAlpine. No it's Shanae's "illusions" which continues to dominate. Meg Mac has thus been stuck at #2 for 4 straight weeks. Villainy move up to #3 with "The Launch", ahead of Dora Jar who's been bumped to #4, while BABYMETAL introduce some semblance of familiarity in the top 5 with "Divine Attack - Shingeki -" at #5.
NEW ENTRIES
It's business as increasingly usual as Tkay Maidza returns to the chart. The latest addition is the ever so timely "Nights In December" at #20, which gives her an incredible 16 entries all up. There's actually been a big tie on 15 entries all year so this zooms her up the list, tying Owl Eyes and only behind Kendrick Lamar's 22 entries. A considerable distance away from matching this is the next debut, as it's a first time entry for Chores & Jezzabel Doran, two names I've not seen in some time. Said entry is "Crave You" which enters at #24. Speaking of names that I've not seen in a while, returning to the fold recently has been Vallis Alps. Their only entry was "Fading" which came through just shy of 6 years ago. They'll be hoping to surpass that #31 peaker with their newest entry "Set It Off, Set It Right", which starts closely at #33.
Oh you know I've been waiting to say it was only a "Matter Of Time" but Meg Mac has taken the top spot this week, what a time to be alive. Shanae is knocked down a spot to #2, while Villainy hold #3. BABYMETAL climb up to #4 while SG Lewis & Tove Lo continue to reach new highs with "Call On Me" at #5. Andy Bull's first ever entry becomes his first top 10 hit, and right behind is KUČKA with her 3rd top 10 hit "Not There".
NEW ENTRIES
She's had one of the biggest hits of the year in this space so maybe it's not a surprise to see Carla Wehbe back with a follow up. "introvert (with extroverted expectations)" is in at #28 and is her 2nd entry to date. This is a considerably longer time between drinks but for the first time in over 10 years, Matt Corby is back on the chart. He picked up a couple entries back then and now has a 3rd with "Problems" at #32. Our most prolific entrant this week is Lastlings, given that they're now up to 7 entries to date, and hopefully this is one that I'll more easily recognise when I hear it. "Get What You Want" is new at #35.
Meg Mac lasts a second week at #1 with "Matter Of Time", as the next contender seems yet to truly emerge. Shanae still holds the #2 slot with "illusions". BABYMETAL climb up to #3 to swap with Villainy down to #4. SG Lewis & Tove Lo hold the #5 "Call On Me". Elsewhere in the top 10, Elizabeth M. Drummond scores her first top 10 hit with "Underground" up to #9.
NEW ENTRIES
As we round up the last few weeks of the year, actually there's only one more to go after this one, we find what can get through in time. First off it's a new first time entry for Australian artist Bumpy, with "Hide & Seek" (no relation to Stormzy) in at #27. Next we go to that crazy world of Adelaide for another song on the louder side of the spectrum. It's another first time entry too, alt. picking up "WRAITH" at #31. Lastly it's a long awaited return to the chart for Phoenix. They actually have not appeared here since 2013 if you can believe it. Now they're able to score their 6th entry thanks to the very slow climb of "Winter Solstice" to #38.
In the previous two times that a chart has fallen on Christmas Day, we've seen the #1 song change over. That is not the case this year, as Meg Mac lasts a 3rd week at #1 with "Matter Of Time". BABYMETAL are up to #2 with "Divine Attack - Shingeki -". Shanae is down a spot to #3 with "illusions", while Villainy & SG Lowis are holding their top 5 spots. Rich Brian has his first top 10 entry, while $NOT has his second with "VIVID" up to #9.
NEW ENTRIES
Well they're on their way up at the pointy end of the chart, but BABYMETAL want more, and I conveniently overlooked the initial release of "Monochrome". They're up to 8 entries to date as it comes in at #18. Starting to rack up those entries, and proof that I don't totally throw out anything with ridiculous samples straight off, Dove Cameron now has 4 entries to date. The latest is "Girl Like Me" at #33, charting slightly higher than Edwyn Collins did in 2011. Lastly it's a first time entry for Jen Cloher, as "Mana Takatāpui" comes through at #36, as the last debut of the year.
