Singles Chartifacts: Miley Cyrus is spending a second week seeding her "Flowers" at the top of the ARIA Singles field, plus the track is #1 in a further 25 countries around the world.
"Flowers" took over the top spot on the 'Global Singles Chart' this week after only two weeks of release, helped along by debuting this past week at the #1 spot in both The U.S.A. and Canada, along with it climbing to the top in Germany, Switzerland, South Africa, Slovakia, Romania, Poland, Norway, The Netherlands, Luxembourg, Iceland, Hungary, Greece, Denmark, Czech Republic, Croatia, Belgium, Austria and Argentina, while it remains for a second week at the summit in England, Ireland, New Zealand, Lithuania and Sweden, a total of 26 countries as of this week, while it achieved Gold in N.Z. (15k) and Silver (200k) in sales in England, and sold 19k in Australia in its first week (last week).
The seven major markets I survey (Oz, NZ, England, Ireland, Germany, USA and Canada) see the song at the top in all of those regions, making the "Flowers" track the first since "7 Rings" for Ariana Grande on February 4th, 2019, to occupying the top of all seven charts, now only the 19th time that this chart feat has occurred. Miley's #1 also increases her weeks in the singles-summit to now three during this decade (and in total), while she also joins another exclusive club of father and child who've both topped the Australian Singles Chart, after the Sinatra's (Frank and Nancy), Lennon's (John and Julian), Cole's (Nat 'King' and Natalie), as Miley's father Billy Ray Cyrus has appeared on two #1 songs with "Achy Breaky Heart" (1992 for 7 weeks) and as a guest on the Lil' Nas X track "Old Town Road" (2019 for 13 weeks), having amassed twenty weeks at #1 in total.
"Flowers" spending a second week at #1 also makes it the longest of both Miley's chart-career locally and the longest run at the top for 2023, as every other #1 this year has logged a single week at the top. That run could be broken next week as the Triple J Hottest 100 countdown for 2022 is occurring this weekend, so it could affect next week's top spot, but we'll have to wait and see how their winner "Say Nothing" by Flume fares.
There are 15 songs which don't move within the Top 50 this week, and eight of them reside within the Top 10, as Miley remains planted at the top, this is followed by last week's Top 7 singles not moving at all. At #2 is SZA with her former #1 "Kill Bill", while she does gain the top spot on the ARIA Albums Chart this week with her second album "SOS", logging its first ever week at #1 after seven weeks of charting, five of which were spent at #2.
RAYE and 070 Shake retain their #3 peak with "Escapism" for a second week, the song newly Gold (●) in sales this week, followed by the potential #1 Album holder for next week in Sam Smith, whose new album "Gloria" was issued on Friday, while their six-week running former #1 "Unholy" is stable at #4, after which is another six-week-#1 in "Anti-Hero" for Taylor Swift at #5 as she dips to #2 on the Albums chart with "Midnights" (which is still the #1 selling vinyl).
Stable at #6 and #7 are "Miss You" for Oliver Tree and Robin Schulz and then "Creepin'" for Metro Boomin', The Weeknd and 21 Savage, holding its peak for a second week, while Metro's album "Heroes & Villains" is one place higher on the LP chart at #6. The only moves within the Top 10 this week sees #8 and #9 swap places, with OneRepublic's "I Ain't Worried" back up a spot to #8 and logging it's half-year within the Top 10 (26 weeks, equal 13th longest of all time in Australia), while David Guetta and Bebe Rexha with "I'm Good (Blue)" dip one spot to #9, with the eighth and final non-mover sitting at #10 being "Made You Look" for Meghan Trainor, who will be appearing on our TV screens from this coming Monday (Jan. 30th) as a judge/mentor on the returning 'Australian Idol', so the song could climb next week (or the week after the J surge next week).
TOP 20: The three non-movers within the Top 20 are for Harry Styles' "As it Was" at #11 (now certified 6x▲Platinum in sales), "Let Go" for Central Cee at #12 and "B.O.T.A." for Eliza Rose at #17. After two weeks of sitting at #22 the Tiësto and Tate McRae track "10:35" jumps up nine places to land at a new peak of #13, followed by the two further climbing tracks within the Top 20, "Until I Found You" for Stephen Sanchez and Em Beihold (16 to #14, HP-12) and "Something in the Orange" by Zach Bryan (18 to #16, HP-15), one place shy of its former peak from October 24th, 2022.
Dropping within the Top 20 are "Heat Waves" for Glass Animals, back down five places to #18, "Cold Heart (PNAU Remix)" for currently touring artist here Elton John along with Dua Lipa (15 to #19), and then dipping one place to #20 is the Rema and Selena Gomez track "Calm Down" which saw a new peak last week.
TOP 30: The Top 30 is topped and tailed by non-moving tracks this week, with "Bad Habit" for Steve Lacy at #21 and "golden hour" by JVKE at #30, while one of last week's lower fifty entries sees a massive sixty-six place jump to land at #22 this week, Sabrina Carpenter and "Nonsense", which last week became only her second Top 100 entry after "Skin" hit #61 in February 2021, and now with this new entry jumping so high it becomes her first ever Top 30 placement in Australia, while she's had two #44 Albums with "Evolution" (October 2016) and last years "emails I can't send" (July 2022).
Lizzo's "2 Be Loved (Am I Ready)" is the only other climbing track within the Top 30, up to #27 this week, while dropping back down nine places to #23 after re-peaking at #14 last week is Dean Lewis' "How Do I Say Goodbye", with the song also dipping in England (26 to #31), Ireland (19 to #28), departing after two weeks at #40 in New Zealand, but climbing again to a new peak in Canada (44 to #42). "Sunroof" for Nicky Youre and dazy drops back four spots to #24, with Ed Sheeran's upcoming national tour starting February 17th (he starts in New Zealand from the 2nd of Feb.; next week), he has a small decline with his "Shivers" track (27 to #28), while Tom Odell's "Another Love" has fallen three to #29.
TOP 40: The first big entry for the year was the Skrillex, Fred again... and Flowdan track "Rumble", which debuted at #35 on January 16th, while last week it fell ten places to #45, and now this week it rebounds thirteen places to land at a new peak of #32, followed closely by a six-spot rise back up to #34 for the Lewis Capaldi track "Forget Me", with the only other climbers being "Afraid to Feel" for LF System (to #38) and "Where are You Now" by Lost Frequencies (to #40).
The Kid Laroi issued a new single last week in "I Can't Go Back to the Way it Was", and then on Friday he dropped another new track "Love Again", which could both be replacing his waning "Stay" track with Justin Bieber very soon, as that song is down six places to #31 this week, with two eight-place falls occurring for both "Bad Habits" by Ed Sheeran and "Mr. Brightside" by The Killers to #37 and #39 respectively.
TOP 50: #41 and #42 swap places this week, with Post Malone's "I Like You" back up one to #41 and down one to #42 is The Weeknd's "Save Your Tears", while he also holds for a third week at #49 with his third and final Top 50 appearance "Die for You". The Lil' Nas X track "Star Walkin'" is back down five places to #43, followed by two double-digit-drops for "Levitating" by Dua Lipa (35 to #47) and "Under the Influence" by Chris Brown (33 to #50).
Climbing into the Top 50 this week are two further tracks, starting with a seven-place climb to a new peak of #44 for the second chart entry for D4vd called "Here with Me", which after four weeks within the Top 100 (87-55-51) has landed a Top 50 berth, while he previously peaked at #40 with his first entry "Romantic Homicide" (peaked Oct. 17th, 2022). The other song is "The Color Violet" by Tory Lanez, which rises six spots to land at #46 after debuting and spending the past two weeks at #52. This entry for Tory becomes their first ever solo Top 50 entry, plus third overall having previously charted as a guest on "Trust Nobody" by Cashmere Cat and Selena Gomez (HP-46, Nov. 2016) and "Kika" by 6ix9ine (HP-30, Dec. 2018).
NEW ENTRY #15 - Sure Thing by Miguel (Jive/Sony) is the first chart appearance for 2010 song by Miguel, and now his sixth ever chart entry here (three as lead, three as guest artist), having never previously seen a Top 50 entry for any of his solo work, this TikTok-fed revival for his third ever issued single sees it currently sitting at #5 in New Zealand, #10 in England, #9 in Ireland, No.42 in The U.S.A. (former peak #36), and at a new peak in Canada (28 to #21). His two previous solo entries were "Adorn" (HP-61, Sept. 2012) and "Coffee" (feat. Wale: HP-78, May 2015), while his highest chart position was #6 on the Mariah Carey track "#Beautiful" (peaked June 2013) and his others were with A$AP Rocky and "Everyday" (HP-49, May 2015) and on the Kygo track "Remind Me to Forget" (HP-14, late May 2018).
Album Chartifacts: After seven weeks since its release, the second album for SZA called "SOS" finally climbs into the No.1 spot in Australia.
"SOS" (Top Dawg/RCA) becomes the 965th No.1 Album in Australia (1965 to 2023), the 816th for ARIA (1983 to 2023), the first new No.1 of 2023 and first ever for SZA and her label Top Dawg, plus the set is also the 42nd for the RCA record label, with their last being for Kings of Leon with "When You See Yourself" on March 15th, 2021.
The SZA set had been sitting at No.2 (5 weeks) and No.3 (1 week) in the past, and now the album join's other locations where it is again at No.1; in New Zealand, The U.S.A. (both sixth week) and Canada (fifth week), while the album previously scored a No.1 single with "Kill Bill" three weeks ago (Jan. 16th) for a sole week at the top, which is what might occur for this album also, as Sam Smith issued their new album "Gloria" on Friday, so that might take over the top spot in Australia next week. "SOS" is now the second such titled album to hit the top locally, after October 3rd, 2022's "5SOS5" for 5 Seconds of Summer (1 week), the new No.1 also becomes the 337th Album by an American Act to hit the top here, plus it's the 155th by a Solo Female Artist, while for SZA she becomes the 164th American Act (solo male or female, duo or group) and the 39th Solo American Female Artist to grace the top of our Album Charts.
After eleven weeks at No.1 the Taylor Swift album "Midnights" is back down to No.2, a position it's only sat in twice before, December 5th and 12th, 2022, while the album retains the No.1 spot on the Vinyl Sales Chart for an eighth broken week. This is followed by two of the three best of collections within the Top 10, The Weeknd with "The Highlights" and current touring legend Elton John with "Diamonds" (No.1 Catalogue Album this week), while the is Eminem with "Curtain Call: The Hits", all of which rise back up one spot to No.3, No.4 and No.7 respectively.
Further rising albums within the Top 10 are "Harry's House" for Harry Styles (7 to No.5; No.7 vinyl), "Heroes & Villains" for Metro Boomin' (9 to No.6, HP-5), while returning to the ten are "Starboy" for The Weeknd (11 to No.9, WI10-7) and "Future Nostalgia" for Dua Lipa (14 to No.10, WI10-66). The second and final album declining within the Top 10 is "AM" for Arctic Monkeys (6 to No.8), which is still the No.4 vinyl this week, plus they also have the No.12 selling vinyl with "Favourite Worst Nightmare", and last week's No.3 entry for "The Car" (HP-2, WI10-2) crashes out of the Top 50 all together this week after a pop-up shop and vinyl sales surge the previous week.
TOP 20: The other Top 10 dropout this week is "The Essential" for Foo Fighters (HP-5, WI10-10; No.20 vinyl), down one spot to No.11, while four albums hold their positions from last week's Top 20, "SOUR" by Olivia Rodrigo at No.12, "This One's for You" by Luke Combs at No.13, "Fine Line" by Harry Styles at No.17 and three-weeks-and-counting future tourist Ed Sheeran with "÷ (divide)" at No.18. Luke's other Top 20 entry is "What You See Ain't Always What You Get", up two spots to No.14, with a seven-place jump to No.15 for Taylor's "1989" set, while Eminem's "Curtain Call 2" climbs two spots to land back within the Top 20 at No.19.
TOP 30:Ed's second (and final) Top 50 entry this week is his "= (equals)" set back up two places to No.21, followed by rises for "Dangerous" by Morgan Wallen (25 to No.22), "After Hours" by The Weeknd (28 to No.23), "Growin' Up" by Luke Combs (26 to No.24, the title track was issued a single on Friday Jan. 27th), "Her Loss" by Drake and 21 Savage (32 to No.28), a massive twelve place leap to No.29 for "Planet Her" by Doja Cat and the XXXTentacion "Look at Me: The Album" returns to the Top 30 by climbing seven places to No.30. The only major decline within the thirty is a five place drop to No.25 for Taylor's "Lover" set.
TOP 40: The fourth and fifth (and final) Taylor Swift albums within the Top 50 are sitting back-to-back, with her "Reputation" down seven places to No.31, and her "folklore" set back up two to No.32. Eminem has a third rise this week with "The Eminem Show" (36 to No.33), while the pending second Lewis Capaldi album (due May 19th) sees his debut set "Divinely Uninspired to a Hellish Extent" jump back up twelve places to No.34. Further rises occur for "Teenage Dreams" by Katy Perry (38 to No.35), 'Bohemian Rhapsody' by Queen (40 to No.36) and Spacey Jane with "Here Comes Everybody" (42 to No.38), while one place higher and dropping eight places to No.37 is the INXS "Very Best of". Kendrick Lamar is down eight places to No.39 with "Good Kid, M.A.A.D. City", which is the No.3 vinyl this week, while he also sees entries on that chart at No.13 with "Damn" and No.14 with "Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers". NEW ENTRY:* #27 (LP#3) - Rush! by Måneskin (Epic/Sony Italy) is the third studio album from the Italian Rock act, who won Eurovision in 2021, and their first to chart in Australia, as they have only scored two Top 20 singles in 2021, "Beggin'" (HP-3) and "I Wanna Be Your Slave" (HP-15), while this album has seen four pre-release tracks in "Mammamia" (Oct. 2021), "Supermodel" (May 2022), "The Loneliest" (Oct. 2022) and just recently "Gossip" (Jan. 2023).
