"Frogstomp" is mediocre as hell. While you're busy hatejerking over the fact that Daniel Johns once made plodding post-grunge, and now does not, I'm cringing over the fact that you hold such amateur work up on a pedestal.
But seriously, imagine devoting your life to a craft since you were a teenager. Imagine being told by everyone that at 35, you're not even remotely close to how good you were when you were 15. Because you had the audacity to grow up.
This isn't great, and seems less creative than a lot of his '00s output, but at the worst of times it's still listenable, which is more than I can say about 'FAT BOY!11!! FAT BOY11!!!' I do like the way he layers his vocals (does it better than Chet Faker does, who seems to be a strong influence here) but the hook falls a little flat this time. "Preach" is a better track. 3.5
Side note: I can't help but wonder if those who do hold up "Frogstomp" so highly actually still listen to it, or are just reminiscing how much they liked it in 1995. I can't decide which scenario concerns me more.
*** Interesting sound. I find myself waiting for this to hit that next level but it doesn't ever get there and that is the ultimate downfall. Daniel's vocals are solid although the falsetto at one moment didn't seem to fit right.
