Love it! A brilliant work of songwriting executed masterfully. I'd never say this is better than "Hearts a Mess", but wow it comes close. One of my favourite #1 hits in a long time.

I've gone through a number of differing phases with this track, but none of which involve me disliking it in any way. At first I thought it was a nice new track that serves as a decent follow-up to Eyes Wide Open, but it quickly surpassed that. However, as it so often happens with me, with its success at number one here, I got sick of it a little. Now that's subsided, I'm back into it. Starts brilliantly, and just flows so well. Kimbra's part is fantastic also. I never thought that two awesome artists such as these would produce a song that would have this much success, as well as still appealing to me. Easily one of Australia's best ever number ones and definitely one of the best tracks of the year.

Such an incredible song. The quiet vocals are stunning, and the big belting vocals are just thrilling. So great!

A magical song, everything about it is pure brilliance. The start may come off a little slow, but it's building to something amazing, and I enjoy it in it's own right. The music is very cool and fits the mood of the track perfectly, and the vocals from both artists could not be better. They too, sing in a manner which fits the song perfectly. They really get the message and emotion across. Both start out with a beautiful quiet vocal, and as their verses progress, they deliver an outstanding performance. And then it comes to the chorus which is just fantastic on every level. Lyrically, vocally, musically, just outstanding. I just wish there was one more chorus it's that good. This song is quirky perfection. I still can't believe it reached #1. Just awesome. It has to be THE best song of 2011, and one of the best Australian songs ever.

This has to be one of the best songs of recent times! It has had a phenomenal chart run despite it being slow-ish and low-key. I love that this will hopefully get to #1 in the States. I also love that it is still climbing the Best Of All Time list in New Zealand. This song has an incredibly strong chorus and Kimbra complements Gotye's voice well. I really think both have a great voice, and it deserves the success it achieves.

I do fear, however, that Gotye will be a one hit wonder.

When I first heard this song I doubted it but now i don't know what the hell i was thinking. It's vocally suberb - by both artists and the chorus is just awesome. I also think the song is CRYING out for one more chorus in the middle and the first verse is a little slow, a little boring but- like bluezombie said - it's building to something brilliant. 6*

Im with mykl, if the start was as awesome as the middle and ending was I'd give this a 6, but its still a great song. 5*

At first I didn't like it nor understand the hype around it, but after repeat listenings it is clear this is a strong ballad with terrific vocals and wonderful music. Both singers have great voices and carry the song well. A little slow in parts, but a great change from the crap over produced forgetable dance stuff clogging up the charts at the moment!

Well they say goats can't sing, and here's the proof. This sucks, its boring, annoying, overplayed and pure crap.
****
A good track but not outstanding. Reminds me of some past Sting hits. Kimbra definitely adds to the appeal of the song. The slow, soft start is most peculiar in the sense that it is on radio a lot and I have to turn it up above the traffic noise.
******
Extraordinary song! A masterpiece in songwriting and an incredible vocal from the two artists here. One of my all-time favourite songs! An instant Aussie classic!
***
A non spectacular song that once again demonstrates how out of touch I am with modern music. I honestly don't understand the huge love for this song. It takes far too long to build, the vocals occasionally border on annoying and it seems to drag in places. Kudos for getting a none club track to the top but that doesn't make it brilliant or mindblowing. I can imagine though this song will be played for years in infant classes across Australia during xylophone lessons. I do think some idiots may have thought this was a Sting song featuring Katy Perry which led to the initial interest in it.
****
Very catchy and unique song that stands out. This is really memorable. 418,618 sold while at #1. UK#1 for 5 weeks and Ireland#1. 1.3 million copies sold in the UK.

Grammy Record of the Year: 2013.

It's gonna take some effort to top this song as the worst #1 single of the decade. "Hey, Soul Sister" is a worthy second place-getter though.

A spectacular song that literally took the world by storm, managing to reach #1 in the US and UK as well as Australia. Gotye has done a fine job with this song and it is executed excellently with very few dull moments. Every little bit plays their part, whether it's the xylophone melody that resembles Baa Baa Black Sheep, the cool use of Luiz Bonfa's "Seville" to establish the beat, the shimmering flutes during Kimbra's verse, the quiet yet intense drumming before each chorus and the excellent vocal harmonies at the final chorus. Not only are the lyrics relatable to many, the sound is very appealing to many having become a cross-over hit in multiple genres. This has already become a huge modern classic, and it's not hard to see why.

For me, this took a very long time to grow on me, but I have found that this is one of the best ever written songs for the past few years, and although it is not a huge personal favourite, I will never object to listening to this at any time.

One of the best songs of the decade and certainly one of my all time favourites. I remember I heard it the first time on the radio when they announced it as the new MEGAHIT of the week. They had a discussion if it should be this song or another and they decided to go for this song by Gotye. I remember I thought: "finally something very poppy not some kind of dance track but a new popsong". Like you could expect in the past from Toto or Fleetwood Mac or the Eagles. I couldn't get the tune out of my head anymore and wanted to hear it more and more. Loved it from the first time I heard it and after 1 year still love it....
******
Absolutely perfect! One of the biggest songs of the decade, and arguably the biggest song of 2012 globally. I was not surprised this was the Triple J Hottest 100 winner of 2011 (to the point I was humming the opening bars before the song even began), but I was gobsmacked to see this hit #1 across the world, especially in the US and also when this was named Record of the Year at the Grammys!

Hate this still. Cannot stand it!
****
I loathed this with a passion on first listen, but that was probably because of the music video which I thought was extremely creepy. But after a while I warmed to it and started to like it. Surprised but happy with its success not only in Australia but all over the world. Will be remembered as a Australian classic in years to come.

I disliked this at first but after these years, it's considered a classic Australian song for me. The usage of the xylophone throughout its entirety is just creative and it definitely shows off how indie music isn't as boring as people might think.
******
****
Aged better than anticipated, despised it at the time and for a long time after. I’m happy with it now
****
I remember loving this when it came out - back when GotyeMania was running wild on you brother. Then I got really sick of it (sick of Gotye in general, actually). I hadn't listened to it in a couple of years before I played it again recently. I can't deny its lyrical prowess or the general musicianship, but his voice still irks me slightly. I'll give it a 4.2.
