Damn. I didn't see this coming.

I wasn't a big One Direction fan. I never disliked them though, which I don't think a lot of people of my age and gender can say about them.

But viewing them from a general perspective, I always thought that Harry Styles was the most marketable out of all of them. He was just the one that stuck out to me the most.

So when Zayn, Niall and even Louis released singles to chart success without hearing a solo effort from Harry just felt like a missed opportunity.

But perhaps he was just taking his time, because this song took me by surprise.

What I find funny is how different they have all gone with their music. Zayn went down the bad-boy pop-star route, Niall decided to be an acoustic singer-songwriter and Louis thought the generic EDM scene was the place for him. But Harry has gone somewhere different here, and I'm not sure what I would classify it as exactly, but I definitely find it to be more substantive than the other three, and suggests that Harry is looking at the long-term.

The way the chorus just comes together is really good, and his voice sounds great.

I don't know what is coming next, but, seemingly out of nowhere, I'm intrigued.

This is great and definitely the best from the One Direction guys solo efforts.
Harry has always had the biggest profile out of all of them and is the only one who was recognised by an older audience whereas the names of the other four aren't as prolific.
The song is great and has an element of classic rock to it which is great and missing from the mainstream top 40 in some part.
Best British Video at The Brits 2018. His first solo UK#1.

UK#1 and Ireland#6. US#4.

600,000 copies sold in the UK.
Really nice Suprise that Harry has decided to go this direction with his solo stuff.

5*

The second 1D member to release a song that reminds me of Radiohead... this time it's momentary but otherwise it's quite a refreshing earworm. I'm not totally sold on the chorus as yet but what certainly does detract from it is that it drags on quite a bit. 3.5

Quite good.

Very interesting approach that Harry Styles is going for here that worked out for him well and paid off in the end!

A very impressive single - Pillowtalk grew on me, This Town was a right bore and Just Hold On was as generic as lounge music. This tops all of those for me. It's just a nice song with a surprising vocal performance. It sounds like it shouldn't be a hit (and it probably wouldn't be if the Harry Styles name was not attached to it). But I'm glad that it is a hit.

Very interesting concept: a mother will not survive the birth of her child, and those are her last words to her baby. Knowing that adds a lot to the song. The sound is impressive too.

I've seen people say David Bowie, but perhaps just because they have a song called "Stop Crying Your Heart Out", I've never been able to see this as anything other than a tribute to Oasis. And I choose to see it that way so I can make a certain analogy.

This is the musical equivalent of "Yooka-Laylee", a video game made by former Rare staff who formed an independent company and through Kickstarter funding, got to release a video game in 2017 that recalls their titles of 2 decades past, particularly "Banjo-Kazooie". Depending on who you ask, this was either a spectacular success, or spectacular failure. But either way, a common thing that is noted is that there are a lot of lessons from the past that haven't been learnt, sometimes the gameplay can be frustrating, and of course having since grown up and played other games that frequently challenge the expectations of gameplay & story (UNDERTALE, Portal, the Zero Escape series, to name a few), it feels very low stakes & quaint.

Ironically in saying all this, this song actually raises the stakes compared to most hits in the chart, with a grand outcry being made. But nonetheless it ends up being a little indulgent at nearly 6 minutes, Harry strikes me as a fan of "Be Here Now". But in the end, I enjoyed "Yooka-Laylee", and I enjoy this.

Pretty good. Good pop song kind of different. Harry might have a future as a solo star.

Great debut in his solo venture. Wow, i totally forgot to review this.

Good track. Best from all the OD members so far.

Was never a 1D fan but his debut solo single couldn't be better than this. Absolutely amazing!

In 2015, Zayn left a big boyband with a lot of fame
By chance his bandmates came across a contract and soon they did the same
At home, there was 23 year-old Harry and his idea of fun
Is making a record called a self-titled high on glam influences in its songs.

That's as close as I can get to writing a review to the tune of Prince's "Sign O' the Times" and will conclude that while it's not in the purple one's level on incredible-ness, is still pretty damn good itself.

Still amazingly brilliant and I also hear the Bowie, Oasis and even Beatles influences here.

P = 202
