Funky. Great return from Mark Ronson.
*****
Disappointing, but it's okay.

EDIT: I swear I was meant to update this review earlier, just didn't get around to it.

This is just awesome now, there are just so many highlights!

Originally, I must say that I was very disappointed with this, because it was totally different to what I was expecting and hoping for from Mark Ronson. For some reason, on the first few listens, it just didn't capture me at all and I totally wasn't interested.

Then it became a big hit, and this frustrated me a lot, because I really wasn't understanding the hype. All the praise this song was receiving made me hate this song at some points in time, because I generally hate overpraised songs (or songs that are acclaimed more than I think they are deserving of) as much as songs I think are actually bad.

Even in my mid-decade chart, I said that this song had "diminished any hope I ever had" for becoming a Mark Ronson fan. This just shows the dislike I had for this at some points in time.

But then again, there were times scattered among this hate where I heard this song and just loved it, so I was constantly rebounding between loving and hating it. That is why I didn't get around to editing my review earlier, because every time I heard this, I would probably want to come on here and change my review, and my rating of this would have constantly fluctuated around 1* to 5* on probably a weekly (heck, even daily) basis.

Therefore, there was a lot of frustration, which wasn't helped by the fact that it seemed to be hanging around forever.

A few months later, after the hype settled down, I heard the song again by chance and was just loving the fun of it all. Just enjoying it without all the talk, and listening to it in isolation, made me realise there was a lot to like.

One thing that annoyed me at first is the deep-voiced "doo-doo-doo", but, while still irking me a little, actually leads into Bruno's entrance (along with that nice little guitar part) really well.

Then Bruno gets going, and it is all great from here. Some very cool lines here, with each one improving on the previous one somehow, my favourite being "I'm too hot (hot damn)/ Make a dragon wanna retire man". But then again, each line pretty much hits its target, and Bruno's delivery of it all faultless.

Also, the "owh" before the beginning of the first verse and the "yah"'s before the "Don't believe me just watch" parts just get me amped up, and are probably my favourite parts of the track actually.

If anything, I think the music during the verses is a bit simplistic (just drums I think), but at least it keeps the focus on what Bruno is spitting out at us. It then builds during that pre-chorus, and then explodes during that "breakdown" part. The sound effects are just perfect too (particularly the kiss after "Gotta kiss myself I'm so pretty").

The outro is magnificent too, however, that final blast of the trumpets just doesn't sound right to me, which is a shame because that is the final noise we hear on the track. I'm just saying that a song shouldn't end on that note.

Besides that, this is great, and I really wish I enjoyed this when it was big. Better late than never I suppose, but it really would have been nice to been in on this when everyone else was.

As for comparison with OutKast's "Hey Ya", to me, I still don't like this anywhere near as much as that, which goes to show what I think of that song, because I had a lot of good things to say about this. That song is in another class which this probably will never get to, keeping how much this grew on me in mind.

#24 EOY 2015

3* -> 5*

Not what I expected - but I still like this a lot!

This sound tires me and Bruno bores me to death.

You know what, FUCK THIS FUCKING OVERRATED PIECE OF FUCKING SHIT, FUCK OFF AND DIE NOW!!!1!!1!!! In all seriousness though, so annoying, overrated and it just won't die, it's Party Rock Anthem all over again. Not a single thing to love about it, I just don't get it. At least with most annoying things I can find reasons why others would like but I can't for this. Sounds so boring and tired while also getting on my nerves, especially the verses, OMG the verses, ARGH!!! Worst hit of both 2014 and 2015 by far. Bruno's worst ever and that's saying something since I have grown extremely tired of him ever since after Grenade. Lucky for this track I'm not as focused on todays music as I used to be or I would be even angrier. Sorry Uptown Funk fans, a rare 1*.

Savagegrant: Nice Cartman reference. :P

Time keeps passing but my hatred for it only grows, a 0 now.
One of the most overrated AND worst tracks of all time!

It could have been worse but it could also have been better. I couldn't shake the feeling that it was going to turn into One Night In Bangkok at any moment but sadly it didn't.

A very soulful tune that seems to deliver more in the verses. Pretty cool not completely sold on it. 3.5

It's quite mediocre to be honest. Don't understand the fuss. Plz don't do well on H100.

This is a really catchy sing along track. Best British Single at The Brits, 2015. Bruno Mars fifth UK#1. 939,331 copies sold while #1. UK#1 for 7 weeks and Ireland#1. US#1.

2.4 million copies sold in the UK.

Grammy Record of the Year 2016.
Although this has gone on to become one of my least favourite number ones of recent time, it's not all bad - just irritating to me. The verses make little sense to me and it's not until the end that it becomes bearable - the last 30-45 seconds are enjoyable somewhat. The production in the verses and after the second chorus is boring as heck.

I really like this, it's by far the best Michael Jackson song that hasn't been done by him. Bruno does a great job here.

You could say with this recent smash Mark Ronson has Got Lucky

Underrated this, lines like "gotta kiss myself I'm so pretty" are somehow gloriously narcissistic, impossible not to love.

Has that early '80s funk sound with a modern touch. A fun inclusion back into the recent music charts. The most memorable "say what" since 'The Brick Song Verses Gitty Up'.

One thing I cannot be accused of with this song is disliking it because of the artists involved. When I first heard that Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars were collaborating for this, I was thoroughly excited in fact. The two (afaik) Ronson tracks I had heard in the past I had enjoyed, in Bang Bang Bang and Valerie. Bruno's past for me is fantastic, with Grenade and Locked Out Of Heaven both going down as one of my favourites from their respective years.

Anyway, when it came time to hear it for the first time, I had experienced disappointment in music in a bigger way than ever before. I don't exaggerate when I say this, I don't know what I was expecting to hear, but it wasn't this. After I got over the shock of such a poor song, I started actively trying to find something to enjoy about it, and I finally found it in the first verse, which builds up so much promise for the chorus and the rest of the song. I particularly like the start which is just the drum/clap beat, but even I know the song can't stay like that all the way through. Unfortunately, I ended up realising that the thing that ruins the song for me (and I've mentioned this elsewhere already before) is that ridiculous repetition of the 'don't believe me, just watch' line, and I think it's Bruno's pitch in this that is my major gripe, as the repetition of 'uptown funk gonna give it to ya' seconds earlier doesn't annoy me at all.

The song then recovers a little in the second verse, with the resumption of the beat I like from the first verse, but this time, as soon as the funky production comes back in before the chorus, I can no longer tolerate that either, and then that line repeated again at the end of the second chorus just ruins all hope for me ever liking this.

I really hate that I didn't like it from the outset, and I really hate that I could never get into it, but there is one irredeemable feature about it that I just can't get over no matter how much I try. My disappointment in this is probably underestimated by some, especially since I had such high hopes in it which I never voiced prior to its release. Maybe I don't dislike it as much as I think I do, maybe it's just sheer disappointment making me shade it as much as I do, I won't ever know for sure.

Edit: if you're reading this Zacco333, I am most sorry to you for so vehemently shading it in front of you, I am actually quite ashamed and I'll try my best to stop :(

Edit: I AM STILL DISAPPOINTED OKAY

Can't say they didn't get it right with the impact it's had. I think it's cool, happy that this was a smash.

Observations:

-In August 2014, Trinidad James reported that he was dropped from his label and had no money. Good friend Mark Ronson wrote a hit single with a couple of "All Gold Everything" quotes in it; Trinidad James will be collecting royalty cheques for the rest of his life. Mark Ronson is a top bloke.
-Mark Ronson also has a sense of humour, as the refrain in that hook precisely matches the 'ni**a, ni**a, ni**a' line which was obviously taken out of this song.
-I remember watching an episode of MTV's "Cribs" circa 2007, when Mark Ronson had just really hit the big time with his own work as well as what he'd done with Amy Winehouse. Contrary to the norm, Mark Ronson did not have a fancy house with XBoxes in his XBoxes, in fact my house looks better than his did. Still he gave off the impression that he was really chilled and lazy.
-This is probably the hardest Mark Ronson has ever worked on a song. The internet age takes away a lot of the mystère of the industry, but all the stories I hear about the genesis of this song really feel like something of yesteryear. They all knew this was a big record, and worked tirelessly on it to reach its full potential, which is why there is soooo much going on in it.
-Bruno Mars is surely the most talented and entertaining pop star to emerge this decade.
-The fact that Bruno Mars is a pop star is the only thing stopping this track from being lauded to the level of "Hey Ya!" as a modern classic.
-The people on Australia Day who went out of their way to log onto Facebook to complain about this song breaking up their Chet Faker circlejerk sound like the least fun people in the world.
-G-rated bravado doesn't get much better than 'Make a dragon wanna retire'.
-Not reviewing things straight away means that I can include references to newer tracks and pieces of pop culture.
-Unlike The Dress, this is white gold
-"Stay With Me" will always be garbage by comparison regardless of what the average review scores say

Truth be told, I wasn't immediately sold on this track. I really dig some of the Business Intl stuff he did in 2010, and I was a little disappointed at first to see this not really reach the same heights as some of those tracks. Really I think my problem was that the instruments sounded too strained and kind of artificial. The guitar riff at the end of the chorus still has shades of being in there to fill space. If you like it then fair play, just that in a song so loaded like this one, it does start to rank a little low for me.

I kind of learnt to get over that all though when I realised there's really not much I can fault the record for what it's doing. You have to hand it to a track that's so imposing that it eventually turns itself into a verb just to describe how much it imposes on you. But before that, it's introduced as a proper noun. Music is at its best when it manages to convey the profound effect that music makes. Doubly so when it manages to pull off that same effect. In short, "Uptown Funk" gon' give it to ya, and by the time you hear the next pop, the funk shall be within you.

Awesome track that I have only really started to get into. I was really surprised to see this chart in the Top 10 of the Hottest 100 because of how late it was released and that Bruno Mars was in it.

I just want to note that the success of this track for me was a bit of a surprise, certainly not something I was anticipating on the first few listens of it! 2014 was a weak year for #1s for me personally, so when this became a legitimate competitor for the top spot I couldn't help but be really pleased. I hope I don't come across as self-centred or anything, but I'm a bit sad that not everyone shared the enthusiasm for this track like I did and was somewhat expecting.

2014 was a bit of a disappointment for me in numerous ways, I was hoping the overall quality of music would be better but it did dip a little from 2013. And then along came this. It wasn't instant love or anything, but it was enough for me to like it. Within a few weeks it really grew on me and it was exciting to see it become a dark horse for the next big smash hit, which it ended up becoming. It felt awesome for it to go #1 on the ARIA chart and spend many weeks there much like my personal chart. The "Get Lucky" of 2014 comparisons are pretty amusing for me, given that this is my favourite ARIA #1 since "Get Lucky". Also went on to be in the top 5 of my 2014 EOY, an impressive feat for a song that was still peaking when I was making my EOY.

I'd almost go as far to say this is a perfect pop song for me, everything about it works so damn well while it never stops giving me so many awesome hooks. The production is absolutely smashing and flawless while the energy present in the track is just so awesome and fulfilling. Bruno is just flawless here too and provides his best performance to date, filled with so much charisma and personality that really makes the track work the way it does. Whichever part of the song, it's so much fun to sing and that outro in particular is awesome. From the songs I've heard from it, "Unorthodox Jukebox" sounds a bit patchy while this song sounds more fully realised. With the context of this track, I feel like maybe "Unorthodox Jukebox" is just a stepping stone to something brilliant from Bruno's solo material. If so I eagerly wait new material from Bruno, because if "Uptown Funk" is a sign of the quality to come the new material will be great.

For me it really is as awesome as its chart success would imply, and I'm glad I managed to witness first hand it go on to become a massive hit. Easily my favourite from both Bruno and Mark Ronson. Seeing this go to become a massive hit is probably in my top 3 chart highlights of the past few years. Uptown funk most certainly 'gon give it to ya and will definitely be a classic '10s track loved by many for decades to come and if you don't believe me, just watch ;)

I really didn't warm to this very well at first and the saturation factor really didn't help that either.
In hindsight (which is a beautiful thing) I really do think this track deserves all the critical acclaim it receives and I too reckon it will be this era's 'Hey Ya'.
Bruno is just so smooth and the production is phenomenal, pushing 5 atm.

P = 246

Well deserved song of the year - awesome!! As for all the people giving it base reviews when they get sick of it - haters will be haters

This is a good track but definitely doesn't deserve to be above the two Adele's and Gaga on the BOAT. I'm still not a fan of Bruno Mars either, sorry. 4.4*

This song is actually really good, I know that it is overplayed to death but its got a great sound to it. It's heaps different to every song on the charts and I love that about it. Amazing run on the charts and at one point held the record for most weeks in the top 50 (until Shape of You ofc)

not my cup of tea but it's catchy

Thank god this is the #1 song of the decade in the United States. Uptown Funk absolutely deserves that crown!

Horrible and incredibly overrated.

Aardig funk nummer met James Brown-vibes gemaakt door de Britse producer en Amerikaanse zanger.
