So the first verse and the pre-chorus are actually quite good. They have an interesting melody and the vocals are solid enough and the lyrics aren't especially woeful. I actually really like the match/explosion line. But that chorus is just about the most pathetic thing I've heard in music. I despise it. A terrible attempt that can only be classed as failed inspirational; move aside plastic bag, a new queen of lame is stinking things up!

It's so bad that it comes across as the sort of thing an unhappy twelve year old girl would write in her diary after she's had a bad day at school, but she can't write for shit. Rhyming "song" with "song" and "song" does nothing to change my opinion there; it's lazy and sounds poor.

"Prove I'm alright song" is the line that bugs me most; it's supposedly an empowerment song, but where's the empowerment in needing to prove you're alright? Just being alright should be enough; if you're truly alright you don't need to prove it to anyone. And then later (in the one line of the chorus that sounds good) she says "and I don't really care if nobody else believes", which is clear crap considering she was just trying to use this song to prove she's alright, so she must care what people believe.

Good for this if it does actually help someone deal with some crap they're going through, but for me it can do nothing other than disappoint me that the decent opening turns to.....that.

2015 thus far is churning out plenty of hits with verses that sound nothing like the chorus. The lack of cohesion in this is laughable. All in all though it's nothing bad, however I almost certainly will never care for it.

EDIT: After hearing this many times on the radio over the last few months, I'm still confused by this song's success, as it really is quite a poor attempt at music in general.

Something you could definitely file under "failed inspirational".

This song didn't give me much when I first listened to it and it still gives me little. It sounds like failed inspirational catered towards middle-aged mums and while I get that music like that will probably always be around in the charts due to things like The Voice and tv promos, it's not something that usually does much for me. Given that Platten is 34, it perhaps shouldn't come as much of a surprise that it sounds like it does. Lyrically it does sound cliché and the hook just sounds very odd in an unpleasant way that I haven't been able to shake since first listen. I'm at a bit of a loss as to why it's doing so well and so late in its chart run, it feels like it should've left the top 50 already.

I'd hope she's right that she has a lot of fire left in her, because this has very little of it. That said, it's not offensive which means I generally can tolerate listening to it.

One of the better mum pop (?) songs. It's been a slow grower but a strong grower. The chorus hits with some gusto, adding to the enjoyment. It should be tacky but the "one match ... make an explosion" line makes some impact on reflection. A nice feel good track for the 2015 archives. 3.7*

I eventually came to the conclusion that THANK GOODNESS FOR THIS SONG.

The thing is that in the music industry, everyone's different. But that's too much to handle generally so everyone has to go into a box and fit with other people who are loosely the same via a criterion that someone else decided upon. So essentially image becomes very important, but that leads to some very unfortunate things.

Like for instance, the whole thing is sexist as hell. People just have a hard time grasping that women can be as talented as men. That's why you get embarrassing turf war of 'real music' vs. 'manufactured pop rubbish', which sees a pretty blatant gender split. In Australia, Triple M & 96FM are the two stations that go so far as to include 'real music' in their slogans (not the most embarrassing ones they have, mind you). At the time of writing, the top 20 most played songs in the past week between them has an egregious 2:1 ratio. That ratio is bands with only male members to male solo artists. That covers all 20 songs.

Meanwhile, Taylor Swift is most noted for boyfriend troubles, Lady Gaga's talent isn't acknowledged because she's ridiculous, Björk has to explain the absurd concept to interviewers that she produces her music, Lauren Mayberry gets mocked for calling out misogyny. For that matter, you don't need to look hard on this site to find an inappropriate use of 'sl*t', 'b*tch' or 'wh*re'. Anyone who is reading this, if you've used those words inappropriately, I implore you to download your reviews, search for those words and fully remove them (don't just censor). That vile filth is one of the reasons why I actively avoid >95% of reviews here now.

So when Rachel Platten writes a song about "a lot of experiences that were hurting [her] and that were making [her] feel like maybe [she] didn’t have a chance in this industry", and it actually takes off, good for her! Since the stations that specialise in the area have a predominant male bias, there's just no market for a female singer-songwriter (in Australia, most get their biggest success when guesting on a rap or dance single with an odd history of excluded credits), even as the swing of events turns it into the pop zeitgeist. If this is the start of it, then I'm quite happy for it.

Also the song is quite catchy, her voice is pleasant enough (I also randomly observe that for the chorus, the backing vocals that sing "start it right now" sound remarkably like Ellie Goulding). The piano gets dangerously close to Pachelbel territory, though it is a little buried in the mix anyhow. No masterpiece really but I'm happy to see it in the charts.

This theme has been done to death and so self help motivational songs can now come across as clichéd. This is a good song with a pace that keeps it interesting. UK#1 and Ireland#6.

I have avoided reviewing this for so long because I couldn't put my thoughts into words. Well, there is bland & generic and then there is Fight Song; it's just about every cliché from the last 5 years put into one song. Obviously that makes it an easy target to hate on which is kind of ironic since it tries so hard to be harmless, but it certainly does deserve a 1* rating for making me feel so very frustrated. Actually I'm not even sure that word describes my feelings about this, but to be fair this song is quite unique in that regard. A bit endearing too, but ugh, I never want to hear it again.
