It is probably more fair to compare it against "Ride" and for me it's a bit less solid than that one. Reasonably catchy but it does feel a bit too soundtrack-nichey for me. 3.5
****
Decent.
***
A little better then Ride but it's no Stressed Out. 3.2.
****
Solid.
*****
Another surprisingly impressive tune from Twenty One Pilots. Suits the Suicide Squad soundtrack well in terms of tone, lyrics, and production.
*****
Cool track, although I feel like the drum hits a little too late in the track. I like the lyrics though and it seems to just sneak up on you kind of.

I feel like I should appreciate this more because it's aiming for a darker sound, but it never gets there. Even Stressed Out sounded more haunting than this does. At least it's better than Ride.

Their best song so far. Lest not annoying like "Stressing Out"

Does nothing for me and feels far too dull to be on the soundtrack of Suicide Squad. I agree with Chemmical in that it fails to create the dark mood to complement the tone of the movie.

Very deep but complicated lyrics, had to listen to it a few times to kinda understand them. I have to admit I didn't immediately love the sound of it, but after 3 or 4 times I loved it. Has a very dark vibe, probably because of the b6 inbetween the 5. Also the early offbeat starting of the 3rd and 4th verse adds alot to it and makes the song stand out.

In hindsight, I'm kind of glad twenty one pilots are around and doing what they do. I may get annoyed when they clog up the alternative charts or have their cringey fanbase clog up cyberspace, but the important thing is that they do weird things. Even in their most popular songs, like this one, weird things are happening, and for something like this to break through into the mainstream in all of its weirdness means that it's easier to accept. I mean look at the shock and horror that occurs when anything remotely unsettling breaks through. I find that often people will evaluate music based on how it compares to what they've been nurtured on to be comfortable with. Anything outside of that will feel foreign and uncomfortable, even if that shouldn't be the case.

Other than that, twenty one pilots serve well as an entry level band. That's not meant to be derogatory, some of my favourite media is distinctly entry level and that which I continue to enjoy just as much if not more than the stuff they eventually lead me to. You need entry level stuff to shine a light on things that are either obscured, or feel like too dangerous a step to take. I'd be lacking in self-awareness to not realise that for a 14 year old now, twenty one pilots are what Muse were for a 14 year old me. I'm sure some day in the future, I'll be able to strike up a great conversation about a mutual love of music with someone who got to said stage thanks to discovering twenty one pilots and going out from there. So never take my disgust as a disapproval for yourself. Love the music you love, it's a great feeling.

(This song genuinely has a fair amount of potential that is squandered by its structure. It takes too long to kick up a gear and by the time it finally does, it ends too quickly. The production is a little muddy, but the song hits the vibe it's going for well.)
*****
twenty one pilots were such a fresh breath of air in the mainstream Top 40 stations during their one hit album reign and Heathens is no exception. The dark mood is fitting for its lyrics and production and the depressing undertones feel sinister (which makes sense since it's from the Suicide Squad soundtrack). Honestly, happy that this charted.

Up until this point in time I really thought they were a couple of posers. Being a mega fan of the film and the subsequent film clip it was inevitable I was going to like this. Weird things happening here also helps it's appeal for me, classic!

Topped my personal chart for 6 weeks.

Came in at ??? on my TOP 100 OF 2016.

P = 150
